There is no Greater thing in life than to love and to be loved and yet we often miss it because we don’t understnd how it works or what makes it work. Love is not static; it’s nature is to expand and grow. We may dam it up in our life and refuse to let it flow the way it is designed.  Love is the primay ingredient of all relationships; it is a necessary part of all human growth

Just as that old song says, Love certainly is the many splendored thing. Love is the very core of all Personal Development without it everything becomes dull and vain.

Henry Drummond, a great philosopher, wrote a book many years ago entitled “The Summon Bonum“, a Latin term meaning “The Greatest Thing in the World” and according to him, the greatest thing was love. Of all the emotions, money, real estate, diamonds and gold and everything else, love is the most precious. If we don’t have love we are indeed poor and desperate people.

In the English language there is only one word for love and it is used to express our likes for just about everything. In the Greek there are at least 4 words for love and each describes a different facet of love; here are three of them: Eros is sexual love, phileo is the love of people and agape is a divine love attributed to God but also experienced by believers who are Disciples of Christ.

Much of what we consider to be love is nothing more than infatuation. Infatuation is the first step in a romantic realationship that can progress to true love but it is in fact just a first step and it is usually the first emotions one has toward someone who they are atracted to. There can be infatuation without even knowning a person and some mistake it for love at first sight. There is actually no love at first sight because love develops as one gets to know another person.

Another mistaken example of what true love isn’t is so identified by the Greek term Eros which is sexual. Two people my be attracted sexually without haveing love for each other. The term “making love” is often used to discribe having sex but in essence it is not making love at all because once again true love is developed by knowing another person and continues to grow over time.

A marriage that is based on sexual attraction or infatuation only is not likely to last. It is of course possible for love to develope as time goes by but if it dosen’t then there will likely be no meaningful relationship and often the marriage disolves

Then there are of course different shades of love. Love itself is the same but with different applications. For example the love of a mother or father is different than a love for a spouse or for a son or daughter.

Love is characterized or defined by the way it acts; the following is a defination of love based on the activity of love.

1.   Love is patient with others

2.   Love is kind

3.   Love does not envy

4.   Love is not conceited

5.   Love has good manners

6.   Love is not selfish

7.   Love is slow to anger

8.   Love thinks of others in the best terms

9.   Love takes no joy in others pain

10.   Love is strong and able to endure

Those actually come from the Bible; the Bible is certainly a book of wisdom. Someone said that no one’s education is complete without a knowledge of the Bible.

When you consider those things mentioned from the Bible, they cover everything that would create and develop a love relationship.

Another quote from the Bible is “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

We are to love ourselves, if not how could we have the capacity to love other.

How then can we develop love? I know of no better way than to practice the 10 principles of love listed above. Granted it does take time to break old habits but it is proven that when we do anything for 21 days in a row it becomes a habit; that also includes the 10 principles of love. Pick one and then practice it with the people you know for about 3 weeks and see for yourself.

LOVE may apply to various kinds of regard: the charity of the Creator, reverent adoration toward God or toward a person, the relation of parent and child, the regard of friends for each other, romantic feelings for another person, etc. AFFECTION is a fondness for others that is enduring and tender, but calm. DEVOTION is an intense love and steadfast, enduring loyalty to a person; it may also imply consecration to a cause. Liking, inclination, regard, friendliness. Like. adore, adulate, worship.
