Beliefs that Limit Your Success and How to Overcome Them

Many of us develop beliefs that limit our success and someway or somehow we convince ourselves to believe them. The reasons for this vary from individual to individual. It is because, in some cases, we have believed an authority figure like a parent who said something like, “You will never amount to anything” or, “You are worthless” or, “You are no good”; a caring and wise parent would never say those kinds of things but not all parents are wise and some miss the point on caring for their children in a supportive way. It may be because of a feeling of inferiority that was developed as a youth. Youth often make it very hard on each other and it can be a lifelong damaging experience. Sometimes what seems like a string of failure can also dampen one’s spirit and convey a feeling of worthlessness.

Here is what to do if you have the feeling that you have no value for whatever reason. Try to get objectively outside yourself and imagine that you are a fair judge and this fair and honest judge, which is you playacting, is cross examining you and the first question is, “What proof do you have that you have no value”?  This forces you to think in terms of facts and not just something imagined.  Your response may be something like this, “Well I just know”, how do you know; what facts are there that indicate that you have no value? This line of questioning should cause you to think and realize that you actually have no hard facts, only an imagined belief in your mind that you have no value.

Remember that our mind is not who we are; who we are uses the mind and has the capacity to control what the mind does and not the reverse. You cannot run your life on whatever thoughts the mind tries to tell you are the truth. All worry is generated out of the thoughts of the mind which are incorrect about 95% of the time. This is quite amazing but there is a part of us outside the mind that can actually evaluate thoughts and determine if they are accurate or if they are otherwise. This uncanny ability that we have as human beings is what separates us from the animal world. What is it? It is our true inner selves, our spiritual side.

Our spiritual side is not going to mislead us like the mind. Have you ever had a strong inter force that told you that something you were about to do because your mind had persuaded you to do it is not the thing to do?  That was the spirit trying to be in charge instead of the mind. We can learn to let out spirit be in control and weed out the negative and limiting thoughts that we harbor in our mind.

Once we understand how the mind works and once we are willing to take charge and control of what the mind thinks, then we can come to the truth about ourselves and experience a liberating freedom like we never experienced before. Of course this does not happen suddenly but takes time and practice.

Everyone has something of value to offer to the world. When you are able to take control of your own life, then you will discover that there are things that you can share with the world that you may never have considered before. For example you may be a good mom or dad and have had an impact on the lives of your children. You have guided them through some bumps in their young lives. There are a lot of parents out there who could benefit from the knowledge you have gained along the way. There are many things that you have experienced and resolved in your life that many have yet been to resolve and your help could be valuable to them.

Don’t be so hard on yourself. Each of us could be discouraged if all we considered was our failures. All of us have had our share of failure and hard times. That is true for everyone including the rich and famous. The fact is the rich and famous often have considerable more problems because of their status.

The one thing that helps me the most is being able to tell my mind to shut up and leave me alone because I don’t believe what it is trying to convince me to believe. Feelings also can be fickle. I have had a bad feelings and wondered why because there was no apparent reason; this is also a result of a limiting belief. That is when it is time to count your blessings and see all that you have to be thankful for. We literally have to take over and drive limiting beliefs and the resulting, unfounded, bad feelings away.

Probably the very best way to deal with limiting beliefs is to quit thinking just of ourselves and begin to  think of and to help others. There are usually plenty of people in your family or circle of friends that long for someone to show interest in them. If you happen to be a retired person who is thinking how useless you are since retirement, try using your time as a volunteer to help others and see what a difference it makes to feel useful, needed and productive again.

While being successful has a different meaning for different people, it is for sure that it cannot come for you until you learn “How to overcome the beliefs that limit your success”.
