Five Great things that make Life worthwhile

I started taking an interest in personal development over 40 years ago and I have been involved in teaching it for more than 30 years. After a lifetime of being involved in personal development, there is no doubt in my mind what really makes life worthwhile. I’ve decided on these five things:

  • A faith that goes beyond my own little scope of things
  • Meaningful Relationships
  • Freedom to do the things I want to do
  • Work that I enjoy and feel is a contribution to others
  • Feeling good about my life

A faith that goes beyond my own little scope of things:

I find it so incredible that anyone would declare that there is no God. Is a person so gullible as to believe that they have every bit of knowledge and can truly declare that based on that there is no God?

Considerate from this prospective: say that a person has gone to school all their life and studied every discipline that was available; how much of all the knowledge would they now have packed in their little head? Go out and pick up just one grain of sand on some sandy beach and consider how many grains are left on all the beaches of all the oceans in the entire world and the one grain of sand represents their knowledge and the rest of the grains represent all the knowledge they don’t yet have. Is it unreasonable to believe that out there in all that unknown knowledge that there might possibly be the knowledge of God?

For me life has been worthwhile and meaningful because I have faith in and a relationship with an all knowing, all caring, all powerful God. It gives rhyme and reason to an otherwise meaningless existence with absolutely no purpose. You also can have a relationship with God.

Meaningful Relationships:

The second thing that has given a purpose for living is relationships: to have loved a beautiful woman and experienced the lifelong intimacy that is part of the marital union; to have known the joy and the love of having my own children and watching them develop into an adult  and becoming a caring and giving individual, taking on the responsibility of raising their family and making their contribution to society; having grandkids who are full of life and who go around referring to me as papaw; to have friends who would go the last mile with me, who truly care for me as a person and accept me as I am; all that is what makes life worthwhile.

Freedom to do the things I want to do:

The third thing that makes life worthwhile is freedom: the freedom to live my life the way I decide with no government telling me where to live, what to work at and dictating my every move. What a privilege to live in a great land like America, the land of the free and the brave; the land where anyone has the freedom to seek out the things that gives them pleasure and happiness. America where the only limit is the limits we place on ourselves to learn, to earn, to live a life of purpose, to fulfill our every dream.

Work that I enjoy and feel is a contribution to others:

The forth thing that makes life worth living for me is work: that is right, work, working at what gives joy and purpose. Although making money through doing what you truly love to do is very gratifying, there is much more and that is the feeling of contributing to others and the inter satisfaction of being needed and appreciated for what you are able to do to help someone else reach their dreams.

Feeling good about my life:

The fifth thing that makes life worthwhile and really sums it up is feeling good about life: waking up in the morning on a beautiful fall day as it is now as I write this article and taking a deep breath of the cool morning air and seeing the beauty of autumn all around from the golden leaves of the sugar maple just outside the window to the other colors of oaks ,red maples, the orange and green and varying shades of colors all around and being filled with excitement about the things that lie ahead for this day. So true is that quote, “There are no guarantees in life but every day of life is a precious gift”. It is up to each of us to determine what our attitude will be. We can decide to dwell on the bad and the ugly or we can decide to dwell on the good and the beautiful and that very decision will determine how worthwhile life is.

Conclusion:

Oh yeah, as I said in the beginning, that it has taken a lifetime of personal development to come to a full circle and to recognize what truly makes life worth living; too bad that we are not born with such an awareness instead of having to live out most of our life just wondering what it is when it is all around us, all the time.

And also I must actually include a sixth reason that makes life worthwhile: My little Westie dog McDuff. If there was nothing else, he alone would make my life worth living. For one thing I want to take care of him and give him the best life that I can. Dogs are the only thing that loves someone else more than themselves. He truly loves me and depends on me. He is one of my most valuable possessions on this earth.
