Purpose

Time out for priorities

The top price for a Super Bowl ticket is $28,644. You can however get a party ticket and set outside the stadium and watch the game on a large TV screen for only $200. I say that tongue in cheek for it is hard for me to imagine anyone willing to pay either of those prices for a football game that you can sit in the comfort of your home and watch for free.  Oh and if you sit outside the stadium on the grass to watch the game by TV you can also buy beer, if you drink, for only $8 a bottle, once again tongue in cheek. I might be tempted to pay the normal price for an inside ticket but to sit outside or pay the premium is out of mind.

The price of the ticket is only a part of the overall expense since there is the cost of the round trip flight and the cost of at least a couple of nights in a hotel plus the cost of eating several meals out; this altogether could add another $1,000 to $5,000 to the expense depending on the kind of reservations and restaurants.

I’m certainly not anti-football since I look forward to watching the game for free on TV but I am wondering if we in America have lost sight of what priorities mean. Placing that kind of value on a football game and so little value on other things that are of great value is hard to understand.

What it all amounts too regardless of the hype is just another football game where one team wins and another team loses. Since I don’t have a favorite this year it doesn’t matter to me which team wins or which one loses.

What a deal, I can stay at home and watch the game for free and save as much as $30,000 depending on how deep my pockets are. Since I enjoy living a simple lifestyle, I could live a whole year on the savings on one football game by not going and of course again depending on how deep my pockets are.

And of course I understand that the people who are able to spend that kind of money will not miss it anyway; it is a drop in the bucket to them. The thing is that at this time there are so many families who are just making it financially while others aren’t making it at all and have lost just about everything during the downturn. I realize that all the rich people in this country put together could not change that problem and that is not the point. The point, at least for me, is that priorities still count and how I choose to spend my money tells what my priorities are and I want my priorities to reflect what real value is and what isn’t.

So what are the things I count valuable? For one thing I see it of great value to support the church I’m a member of financially. I believe in helping needy children around the world through Compassion International for one thing. I believe in helping my family when the need arises. I never refuse to help those who ask me for help when I’m out somewhere or when traveling.

$30,000 is enough to help 60 children a whole year to have food on the table and to go to school in a third world country. At least for me and I speak only for myself, it is more gratifying to help just one child in some third world county or here at home to have food on the table and clothes to wear and a school to attend than to see any Super Bowl game.
