Living in Unity with Each Other…

We live in a world of disunity; there is fighting going on the world over, some large scale war other small skirmishes. There is also fighting in the home and sometimes extreme violence. There are confrontations at work and even at church. So where is there a place to live in peace and unity?

Psalm 133:1-3 (King James Version)

1Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!

2It is like the precious ointment upon the head, that ran down upon the beard, even Aaron’s beard: that went down to the skirts of his garments;

3As the dew of Hermon, and as the dew that descended upon the mountains of Zion: for there the LORD commanded the blessing, even life for evermore.

That is indeed a wonderful thought but can it really be true in our life today; after all that was 100s of years ago.

It is true that we have no control over what others do either at home or abroad but we do have control over ourselves and how things go in our own home. The home can be a difficult place. Sometimes Husbands and wives do not get along well; brothers and sisters also fight and live in a state of competition. So how is there to be unity with each other even in the home? The home is really where unity starts.

That old saying, “the family that prays together, stays together” is very true. When a family studies the Bible together, prays together and worships together, it is going to also experience unity. I don’t mean to say that there will be no disagreements or problems because we are not perfect and there are no perfect families but there can be a high degree of love and unity in any home. Understand that God’s condition for blessing the home, the church and the nation is living in unity with each other and that is not an option. If we want God’s blessings, we must learn to live in unity.

What causes disunity?

  • Strong personal opinions.
  • One’s own personal preferences.
  • Exalted pride.
  • Self Centeredness
  • Ego
  • Unloving
  • Uncaring
  • Unforgiving
  • Unconcern
  • Selfishness
  • Envy
  • Uncooperative
  • Hatred

There is nothing attractive about that list yet those things are the primary reasons why we have disunity whether it is in the home, church, nation or the world. What it really amounts to is a high concern for self and a low concern for others. Unity is a matter of overcoming what we naturally tend to be and become what we need to be through personal development in order to ever have any degree of unity.

Parents can’t lead their family in unity and harmony if they themselves don’t have the attributes of unity which are the opposite of those listed above, neither can pastors lead their church in unity or political leaders lead the nation in unity. Below are the attributes that inspire unity:

What inspires unity

  • Honors others opinions
  • Considers others preferences
  • Takes pride in others
  • Looks out for the needs of others
  • Humble
  • Loving
  • Caring
  • Forgiving
  • Concerned
  • Unselfish
  • Does not envy
  • Cooperates with others
  • Has no hatred

Who wouldn’t rather be characterized by this list instead of the first one? Yet we often find ourselves identified by the first list.

God created us to live in unity and since he is omniscient, he knows how we are best suited and how we can best enjoy our lives.

Conclusion

So the question is: Why do we resist the Biblical way of raising the family, conducting worship in the church and guiding a nation?

The German theologian, Dietrich Bonhoeffer said, “Our community with one another consists solely in what Christ has done for both of us.” That’s the problem. When we leave the Lord out of the family and seek only what we can get or leave the Lord out of church and complain because we are not getting what we need or want and finally try to put God out of any mention of our nation, then we should not expect unity.
