Walking in the flesh
In these scriptures God contrast living in unity with God and living in sin and disunity from God. Those living in disunity are characterized as walking in the flesh. Notice how the Bible describes those walking in the flesh: 19Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness (sexual lust),
20Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance (disagreeable), emulations (jealous rivalry), wrath, strife, seditions (rebellion), heresies,
21Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings (rioting), and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.
Two separate lifestyles
There are two groups that can be taken from the above scripture: The first is a conservative, secular lifestyle, which is far more decent and controlled. The second is the liberal, secular lifestyle where everything and anything could apply. According to the Bible, “They which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.” (Galatians 5:21)
Walking in the spirit
Those living in unity with God are characterized as walking in the spirit and therefore bearing the fruit of the Spirit: 22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, 23Meekness (teachable), temperance (self control): against such there is no law.24And they that are Christ’s have crucified (gained control over) the flesh with the affections and lusts.25If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
Let me clarify that not all believers walk in the Spirit and there are also varying degrees of walking in the Spirit. Some are more committed to the Lord and have a closer walk with him while others may be far away. But what our Lord requires is a close unity with him, walking in the Spirit, in order to receive his best blessings.
Personal development of the best kind
There isn’t a better way to grow in personal development than to walk in the Spirit; to do so means that we take on the very qualities of God himself. They are not our qualities per say but they are the reflection of God who is within us. Others can then see God in us and this in turn glorifies God.
