Maintaining Unity of Purpose in life Events…

Unity of purpose is singleness or constancy of purpose or action and continuity.

Many of the life events are natural occurrences but we must deal with them with unity of purpose even though they may be very stressful. Sometimes life events can be difficult to accept. For example:

1. Death: loss of a mate or other close family or friends

2. Major illness or injury

3. Divorce or separation

4. Changing jobs or relocating

5. Loss of employment or financial difficulties

All of the above are common life events and each can be devastating and each can cause the loss of unity of purpose. I would like to elaborate on each of those but for this article I will only use one as an example:

For example, losing a mate can impose the idea that all hope and meaning is now gone. Many times the surviving mate only lives a few months. The stress and loss of meaning and purpose takes away the reason for living and so life ends.

What is meant by unity of purpose is there is a singleness or constancy of purpose or action that must continue therefore your life should go on, certainly not as if nothing happened but it should go on with added determination to fulfill every purpose of your life. There are things that need accomplishing that only you can do. There is a remaining family, whether children or grandchildren, whose lives you will impact. My granddaughter graduates from high school on June 4 and she made it very clear, knowing that I travel a lot, that I am to be there for her graduation which I had already planned to do. It is important to her to have her grandfather present for a very important event in her life.

You see, I lost my dear wife about 6 years ago and it was the hardest life event to deal with that has ever happened to me. At that time unity of purpose reigned strongly in my mind and I begin to search for a new direction in my life, a direction that would become a brand new purpose for my life. It took me a whole year to redirect my life and point it in the direction it is presently going.

The things that have become a part of my life, I never dreamed of before, they just seemed to come together. I had a business at the time but I knew it was time to quit. I never thought of owning a motor home but now I couldn’t get it off my mind. So one day I called my pastor and asked him how I could use  a motorhome to serve the Lord and he gave me the name of a Christian organization that travels about volunteering time to serve needful institutions.

Well I got the motorhome and in the next few years I traveled in 37 states: I led a crew of men to build a church in Arizona, helped a church in Florida, worked on a boy’s ranch in Florida, then another boy’s ranch in Florida. I worked for four different Children’s homes in Tennessee.

But that was not all: even though I had owned a computer for years, I didn’t know how to turn it on; my wife used it for the business. I bought a new lap top and taught myself how to use it and it has become a ministry for me to impact the lives of thousands though my writing. I now have six websites that I write for; one has reached 20,000 a month in visitors and has accumulated over 90,000 comments on the articles.

Yes, unity of purpose has been a driving force in my life and has replaced my former life altogether; it has given me plenty of reason for living.

One of the things I had to learn to deal with also in the line of unity of purpose was grieving. I had never felt grieving to such a degree before. I went to a grieving class with several others who were also going through grieving and I learned more about the purpose of grieving and how to use it to help me get on with my life.

Grieving is like a medication; it has a healing power; so it needs to work its course. It is not to be repressed with alcohol or drugs or just pushed aside. It will mend a broken heart in time. Neither restrain yourself from weeping. I found a quiet private place to weep. When I felt a need to weep, I would go there and weep till finished. I no longer feel that need  but at the time it lifted a heavy burden, it seemed, from my heart.

Seven things that help for healthy grieving:

1. If you take medication, continue as prescribed. Be sensitive to in change in your health patterns.

2. Continue to eat healthy even if you have lost your appetite.

3. Exercise daily even if it is only a walk around the neighborhood.

4. Try to retain a 7 – 10 hour sleep cycle.

5. Accept any support offered from others; you will need all you can get.

6. Don’t be hesitant to share your feelings with family and friends.

7. Give the grieving process time. Each person has a different pace.

Maintaining unity of purpose in life events will help you to not only get through some real devastating things in your life but also will make you to become a stronger and better person. We all have purpose but sometimes the events that come into our life cloud it. It doesn’t have to be if you just keep thinking and keep going no matter what life throws at you.
