The Biblical Secret to Building a Stronger Family…

None of us are perfect so having a perfect family is out of the question; there will always be challenges and there will always be problems. Nevertheless the home doesn’t have to be just a meeting place to shower and eat and get ready to go somewhere else. It can be a place of serene harmony and peace. I know that that may sound a little overstated to some but it can be true if you know “the Biblical secret to building a stronger family”. The Bible offers great resources for building a stronger family and the thing about it it is free.

There are three absolute essentials to raising children:

  1. 1. Knowing what to say to them
  2. 2. Knowing when to say it
  3. 3. Knowing how to say it

If you can master those three things, then you can build a stronger family.

The Pharisees of the time of Jesus had put together 383 rules and laws, far beyond what God had commanded and they tried to force their laws on others even though they did not keep them themselves. One day they asked the Lord what he considered to be the greatest commandment of all. They did this to try and trick him into saying something that they could accuse him but he said to them a quote from Deuteronomy 6:5 “Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” He added to it, “and love thy neighbor as thyself”

God gave these words to Moses just before Israel crossed over into the Promised Land so that they could build strong families and replenish the land with them. Here is the complete passage:

“Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. 7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.” (Deuteronomy 6:5-9, New International version)

Prerequisites for parents who build stronger families:

These verses express the need to let God’s word completely fill our very being to the point that our lives are a reflection of his word. Not literally pasteing them on your forehead but your life is a reflection of his word just as if they were written upon your forehead and sewed upon the sleeves of your garments. Your children will know if you walk the walk or whether you just talk the talk. There are three things from these verses that every parent needs to follow: Love the Lord; Obey the Lord; Serve the Lord. These are the prerequisites for parents who build stronger families.

What to tell your children:

So to answer the first observation as to what to tell your children: Teach them the word of God. There is no better advice on how to live than what is given in God’s word. It is necessary for the parents to know the word of God and what it means and the right application. An incorrect application of the word can be harmful. Example, if your child comes home from school and tells you that they are being bullied and that they are very fearful of this person who is bulling them, don’t miss-apply the word by saying, “the bible says turn the other cheek”. No! you go to that school and make sure that the bullying is addressed and taken care of. It is first the responsibility of parents to protect their children.

The Bible does not teach that we are to be lily livered, cowering weaklings but the opposite. We are to be strong and courageous. The heroes of the Bible are all powerful, courageous people who were willing to stand and fight and even die for their beliefs.

When to tell your children:

The second observation is when to tell your children “Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up”. That is clear; the time to teach your children is anytime and all the time whenever you are together as a family. That one time talk that parents have with their maturing children will be un-necessary because it has already been covered on an ongoing daily basis.

I realize that some families have raised strong families outside of the teaching of God’s word by having their own set of rules and guiding principles but I want you to know that there is no improving on the teaching of the Bible. There is also another aspect of using the Bible and that is the eternal effect. The only forever family is the family rooted in the words of the Bible. That old saying that “the family that prays together stays together’” is so true. Even though in this life geographically we may be separated for a while, we shall live with God through all eternity together, those of us who know the Lord in freedom and truth.

Finally, knowing how to say it:

Parents are warned about how to treat their children: “Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord”. (Ephesians 6:4, New American Standard Bible)

Children are to be respected and given the opportunity to be a part of the family and have the freedom to express themselves. Some parents seem to be obsessed with barking out orders continually to their children as if they were a drill sergeant training a bunch of recruits. When children respect their parents and authority there is never a need to raise the voice. I don’t mean that there is never a need for firmness…of course there is but remember that love is expressed in kindness and never in anger.

Conclusion:

I could list a bunch or rules here that parents should follow like the children should have a responsibility to fulfill their obligation to the family in carrying out certain chores etc. That is important but that is something that you as a parent need to determine based on the needs and demographics of your own family. Finally, parents who know God’s word and live it will know in their heart what to say, when to say it and how to say it to their children. They indeed will know The Biblical secret to building a stronger family.
