Authority by definition–noun:  “The power to determine, adjudicate, or otherwise settle issues or disputes; jurisdiction; the right to control, command, or determine.” (dictionary.reference.com/browse/​authority)

Understanding the Purpose and Value of Authority

The origin of all authority ultimately is from God; God has delegated authority to man to rule the earth. Governments through Laws that are established are designed to bring order and to provide citizens benefits, security and wellbeing, and to punish law breakers. Without authority and an established system of law, society breaks down and chaos takes over.

One of the greatest problems we face is lack of respect for authority

One of the greatest social problems of our day is the lack of respect for authority. In the 60’s and 70’s, values and core beliefs of our society came under attack and there was a shift away from traditional beliefs and replaced by the philosophy of ‘If it feels good do it!’. One of the primary tenants of the new movement was rebellion against ‘the man’ or the authority structure of society; from that time until the present time, it has been reinforced by music and television as well as the movie industry.

Running paralleled with this movement has been the objective to throw out all God ordained authority and replace it with self rule. The return of respect for authority is of essence to bring the once God Fearing America back to its roots. By God fearing I mean a nation that respects God and his ordained authority.

The present offensive worldwide terrorists movement is what takes over when authority is ousted. Personal rights and liberties are out the window and ruthless dictators tell you how to live and what to do. The lack of authority creates a vacuum that must be filled ant it is filled by those with the biggest threat and determination to bring others into their realm of control and you are told what to believe and how you must live or else become a victim of their ruthlessness.

Most effective place to teach authority

The first and most effective place to teach Respect for authority begins in the home, if you do not teach your children are to show respect for you, their parents, then you can count on the fact that they will not they show respect  for government authority or the church or any other kind.

Parents need to practice what they preach in to have credibility with their children. Saying one thing and doing something else only defeats the process of respecting authority. Also parents need to learn to teach their children with an attitude of love and also a respect for their children.

Children need to be taught that authority is for our protection and help and not to control us. It does not mean that we always agree with every decision nor does it mean that we are to blindly follow. The authorities also have accountability to those who elected them or who pays their salaries through taxes. Authority only comes with responsibility and everyone in authority is accountable to those in authority above them and we all are accountable to God.

Conclusion

The authorities that have been set up both in heaven and on earth are there to benefit each of us. Parents need to teach their children to respect parents, teachers, police, and church and government authorities.
