I’ve just completed reading Jeff Olson’s book “the slight edge”. The philosophy isn’t new; perhaps the title is. The idea is based on doing a little consistently each day using the philosophy of Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Do the thing and you will have the power”;  by doing the things other will not do it gives a person a slight edge and is all it takes to get you in the upward spiral instead of the downward one. Successful people are willing to do the little and make the small right decisions that unsuccessful people aren’t.

I was outside a few minutes ago, taking a break from writing this. My 16 year old grandson drove up and I was talking to him. I told him that I’m getting him a copy  of the slight edge along with 4 others on my list and I was telling him how valuable the information would have been to me when I was his age so I hope he will really get into it when he reads the book.

It is an easy philosophy, just doing things consistently each day that are easy to do but also easy not to do that most people will not do; like for example choosing a healthy diet over an unhealthy one, choosing not to smoke cigarettes rather than giving in to the peer pressure to smoke and kill your body a little at a time.

How we manage five specific areas of life determines whether we are on the upward spiral or on the downward spiral. These five life principles that shape our future and our lives are:

1. Spiritual life

2. Health

3. Personal development

4. Finances

5. Relationships

Spiritual Life:

I started with spiritual life because it is by far the most important. It doesn’t mean just because you are in touch with your spiritual life that you’re going to be successful by world standards but it does mean you are setting the kind of foundation that will enable you to reach the heights of success. Determining what success is can be one of the most important determinations because it has different meanings for different people. Determining what it means to you lets you know how to set your goals.

One thing for sure that success isn’t is spending every waking moment to reach the top; living under a mountain of stress, ruining your health and then dying before your time and at the end wondering why it is that you were never happy in life.

It is a mistake to think that success of itself will give you purpose, meaning or happiness. It could depend on a lot of other things. My pastor recently went to a remote village in South Africa and when he returned he said that the people there were the happiest people he ever saw. He is the pastor of a large church that is filled with prosperous, professional people who have made it to the top. But the pastor thought the people in a third world county who lived in a 10 x 10 hut with a dirt floor who slept on a straw matt were the happiest people he ever knew. Now that is an eye opener as to what our priorities are in this country concerning success and happiness…

Spiritual rightness is when we are in harmony with God and his purpose for our lives. It does not matter what we may accomplish in life, if God is not in our life, it is all in vain. All the things we count important, cars, homes, clothes, money and everything else will burn up in time and become worthless. Only the things we do in Gods purpose last forever.” For what does it gain a person to gain the whole world and lose his own soul”?

First and foremost in life is our standing with God who created us. Please read my article on how to have a spiritual connection with God. It is easy to have a spiritual connection with God and it is easy not to not to have a spiritual connection with God also…

Health:

Health is our greatest asset, greater than gold or silver. Wealth without health is worthless; that being true; it is in-creditable how many destroy their greatest asset a little at a time.  It is just the everyday little choices that we make that determine the difference in being healthy or not being healthy, easy things to do but also easy not to do. Consider the following alarming statistics:

  • The prevalence of obesity has more than doubled in the past 20 years. The rate of adolescent obesity has tripled from 5% to 17%.
  • Obese individuals (BMI 30+) account for 1/3 of the population. and overweight individuals (BMI 25-29) account fo another 1/3 of the population.
  • Obesity can lead to coronary disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, breathing problems, and an increase in many other degenerative diseases.
  • 70% of obese patients have had cardiovascular disease risks factor due to excess weight.
  • Unhealthy weight gain due to poor diet and lack of exercise is responsible for 300.000 deaths each year.
  • The annual cost to society for obesity is $100 billion. (from the slight edge)

There is no greater example of the negative effects of the slight edge than weight gain. Weight gain is usually so gradual that it is unnoticeable from one day to the next but over time it becomes very obvious. Just a slight weight gain of 2 pounds a year. will put you in a health risk zone in a couple of decades. If you happen to be 20 years old presently and you gain an average of only 2 pounds a year you will weigh 40 pounds more by the time you reach 40.

We can choose to eat healthy foods or we can choose to eat foods high in fat and all the other things that are bad for the Body. It is so easy to grab a hamburger at a fast food restaurant, drink sodas and eat candy bars until we weigh a ton and feel like crap.

If we choose the right foods, we will never need to go on a diet. Diets are not the answer to weight control; they imply that they can be an on and off thing. Eating the right food in the right amounts consistently and staying active is the right answer to controlling weight. We are a nation who has not learned that truth with two thirds overweight or obese.

Instead of going the diet route that is surely going to fail, why not try eating nutritious, wholesome foods. Below are five delicious, and nutritious foods that I have had in my diet for a good while; these make an excellent addition to healthy eating and will help you to stay slim and trim.

  • · Almonds

I like to include a handful of almonds in my morning health drink. I just toss a handful in my blender along with six other ingredients and mix it all together. You still get the crunchy nuts for chewing as you drink because they are not totally chopped.

According to “The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition” just eating nuts a couple times a week helped those in a study to keep weight off more than those who ate no nuts.

Almonds are a favorite among some nutritionists. There are only 167 calories per ounce in this food; it also has about 6g of protean and 3g of fiber. These are among those nutrients that give a full feeling and like apples that are crunchy they require chewing. Additionally they keep you feeling full longer.

  • Apples

An apple a day keeps the doctor away is an old cliché but it certainly contains truth. Apples add dietary fiber which contributes to better digestion, reduces cholesterol and contains no calories and on top of that they are very satisfying. They can replace the desire for sweets that are both high in fats and calories.

A study has found that crunchy foods can trick your appetite and make you feel fuller. Just the chewing process may send signals to your body that you are satisfying the body’s needs and making you believe that you have consumed more than you actually have, therefore keeping the hunger drive at bay.

  • Tomatoes

While there are a number of veggies that help you stay slender, tomatoes are my favorite because they are so tasty especially when eaten raw. One cup of red, ripe tomatoes cooked, has only 43 calories.

Since tomatoes like other none starchy vegetables are great for maintaining your weight or loosing weight. I like to drink vegetable juice also which contains tomatoes, carrots, celery, spinach and other vegetables which are also without starch as well as being packed with fiber. Like the other foods mentioned above they give you a satiated feeling.

Finding foods that you consider tasty and at the same time healthy as well as filling is the secret to having a healthy diet. The good news is that these kinds of foods can be found which will satisfy and at the same time help you maintain a healthy weight.

  • Eggs

There is little doubt concerning the protein content of eggs and also eggs have a lot of satiating power. A couple of eggs in the morning will keep you feeling full much longer than some other breakfast foods. While eggs have been given a bad rep in some circles, there is no doubt that they can help in weight control.

According to a study done in 2008 and published in the “International Journal of Obesity”, eating two eggs at breakfast fights weight gain all throughout the day. When dieters ate two eggs for breakfast, it was found that they were able to lose 65% more than those who ate no eggs. It seems that the protean in eggs when eaten in the morning keeps you feeling fuller longer.

The way I eat my two eggs for breakfast is to include them in my blender when I mix my morning health drink. Some might flinch at the idea of eating eggs raw but you can’t tell they are there when mixed with the other ingredients. I use a table spoon or Silver Solution which counters any bacteria.

  • Salmon

A study published in the “International Journal of Obesity” discovered that by eating salmon a few times a week, dieters were able to lose a couple more pounds than those who didn’t. The evidence shows that the fat in salmon can boost satiety levels; also Salmon is relatively low in calories; it only packs 175 calories per 3 oz serving. It is also a good source of omega acids as well as protein. Canned Salmon is found to be just as nutritious as fresh Salmon. So for a couple dollars you can have enough for three servings for one person; that is meat for three meals for me.

These five foods are all foods that I have found to be delicious and they provide much of the nutrition I need daily and the plus is that they are healthy foods.

I however don’t depend entirely on food alone to get all the nutrients my body needs. I also use supplements. While there are so many supplements that are good, I only use a few that I believe to be best for me. This you must also decide for yourself. Here are the ones I like and use daily:

  • Resveratrol

Resveratrol is an anti-aging supplement that is found in a number of foods as well as in red wine. However you can’t get enough from those sources. For example, it would take 1,000 bottles of red wine a day to provide you with an adequate supply of resveratrol. So the best way to get enough resveratrol is by a supplement. It is available at health food stores as well as a number of places online. Be sure that you get one that has at least 250 milligrams’ per gel capsule. Watch this brief video; Barbra Walters interviews the Harvard Medical professor who discovered the affects of resveratrol. CLICK HERE

  • Silver solution

Silver sol is a relatively new silver product which is patented and only produced by one company, American Biotechnology. It is the only silver product that I would recommend. It has been clinically tested against every know bacteria and virus and has been effective in killing them. Since I’ve been taking it for the last 3 years or more I have only had one slight cold. It is an immune builder. CLICK HERE for an informational video.

  • B-12 Vitamin

B-12 is the energy vitamin and it is often deficient in older people. The best way to take  the vitamin B-12 is by sublingual tablets which dissolve under the tongue.

  • Vitamin D

I drink a lot of milk which is high in vitamin D but my favorite source is sunshine. It only takes about 15 minutes of direct sunlight to provide your daily requirements of vitamin D. So I try to be outside that long or longer each day.

In conjunction with a good healthy diet, exercise is a must. It is an excellent way to keep a strong heart muscle, tone and strengthen muscles and build a positive attitude. If you are out of shape or just starting an exercise program it is best to contact your physician before starting one.

Check these benefits of exercise:

  • Strengthens the heart muscle
  • Helps to clear the arteries
  • Defense against viral illness
  • Reduce the risk of high blood pressure, stroke, osteoporosis, type 2 diabeytes, coronary disease and certain cancers
  • Adds energy and creates a higher mood and in general make for a much better feeling

I used to work out in a gym 5 days a week but now because of time I walk each morning a brisk walk which is an excellent way to exercise. It is also good to include some home exercises to strengthen specific muscles. Check my website on exercise CLICK HERE.
