The meltdown of the economy and the vanishing American Dream has put a new perspective on what an accomplished life means. An Accomplished Life is More than Money and Things. It has also brought with it a new way of looking at things. Instead of looking ahead and trying to figure out what the next big opportunity is going to be and focusing attention on an unreachable American Dream, the focus now is getting back to the basics of life, deciding what the best thing to do with life. The new way is connecting to who you are, and focusing on the work, you love, rather than the next great opportunity. This is what unleashes the kind of creative power and drive that creates a good future. It is when heart and mind are engaged in accomplishing the desires of the heart that your life’s purpose becomes visitable.

“Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve,”   W. Clement Stone. Moreover, Henry Ford said, “Whether you think you can or you can’t, you are right.” It is in how we think and how we plan that determines whether we will accomplish great things or just go through life in mediocrity, letting things happen and going with the flow, rather than making things happen that add purpose to life. Someone said, “Failing to plan is planning to fail.” Planning life is the most significant plan of all.

Planning your life should far exceed personal goals that only includes the kind of home, car or salary you desire. True accomplishments include adding value to the lives of others. Accomplishing a certain lifestyle is just a personal accomplishment, but accomplishment that involves making life better for humanity is the larger purpose.

You do not have to be a W. Clement Stone or a Henry Ford to live an accomplished life. Much of the contribution to society is contributed by people who are never heard of, like my friend who shunned college football to become a police officer. Certainly having a desire to live a quality life and to have things that make your life comfortable is worthy, but desire should go beyond that and should be a part of understanding what you want to accomplish in life that is larger than you are. It does not necessarily have to be the career you choose, but could be a side interest that you pursue in conjunction with a career. Many folks have gone outside their career to make huge contributions to society.

The choice is yours in life to determine what you wish to accomplish and what your value to society will be. It is important to think about what you want to accomplish, rather than just wondering aimlessly, taking whatever is offered. Most, I think, see themselves far below their true potential and are willing to settle for much less than their true worth. When the day is finished, you should not have to be sorry that you settled for a penny when you could have asked for and gotten so much more from life. However, it is your responsibility to make the needed changes that lead to accomplishment:

“I bargained with Life for a Penny, and Life would pay no more;
However I begged at evening, when I counted my scanty store.
For Life is a just employer, He will give you what you ask,
But once you have set the wages, why, you must bear the task.
I worked for a menial’s hire, only to learn, dismayed,
That any wage I had asked of Life, Life would have willingly paid.”

                                           (-From Napoleon Hill, “Think and Grow Rich”, 1960, p. 40)

The Apostle Paul said, “I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus,” Philippians 3:14. I want to follow Paul’s example. I feel if I follow God’s leadership and complete his will for my life, then I have accomplished the purpose for which I am on earth. I might add that God’s plan includes many exciting things. I urge you to learn how you can find God’s plan for your life. First, learn how to make a connection with God. I have found that God’s way is far superior to my way. It has added adventure and experiences that I would never have known otherwise. It certainly has taught me about purpose and real accomplishment. Take your life to a new height by earning how to have a connection with God.
