There is no denying that designing a smart business plan is the way to grow any business. Updating that plan to keep in step with the ever changing business world is also necessary if you are to remain competitive.

There is, however, one very important strategy that is often overlooked, and that is personal development. Just how does this all important ingredient to success play out in building your business? I think Jim Rohm answers it best in this clasic quote, “We attract success by the person we become.”

Why is personal development important?

Personal development is what makes the best leaders; it develops the skills that you need for success. Growing a prosperous business or life can’t be left to chance. It requires the best of planning and effort. “Failing to plan is planning to fail”, as it has been said, so the more you improve your skills in every area of personal development, the more apt you are to experience great success, not only in business but also in life. Some of the things personal development will help you with are as follows:

  • It gives confidence when you have a plan
  • It makes you a more effective leader
  • It makes you more aware of needed changes
  • You gain knowledge of yourself and others
  • You develop your skills
  • You pave the way for success

Personal development is coming to terms with what you want to accomplish:

In order to put together a plan of action for personal development, you must first lay out a list of objectives. For example, if you are interested in reaching more clients for your business, the question to ask yourself is, what skill do I need to develop in order to reach that objective? The following is a list of high priority skills that could help anyone to be a better entrepreneur or person:

  • Communication skills
  • People skills (Knowing what causes people respond)
  • Relationship skills
  • Time management skills (Time is the greatest asset)
  • Leadership skills
  • Managerial skills
  • Decision making skills
  • Stress management skills

The above is not an exhaustive list but is just some of the important skills you can develop through personal development. Many are realizing the difference it makes to develop skills and are willing to pay a lot of money for coaching and training in these areas. It is amazing that some pay as much as a cool million dollars a year for qualified coaching in personal development. That may be way out of your league but the good news is that much of what is paid for can be learned through a self help website for free if you know a good source.

I have more than 30 years experience in teaching personal development and over 600 article posted on my website concerning personal development in every area of your life; while I don’t claim to be a Tony Robbins nor do I receive the pay he does, I can help you in your quest for personal development and it is free.

We have the tendency to think that anything that is free isn’t worth much but that isn’t true. It depends on the source. I make helping others my calling in life and it is not a calling that is for the purpose of making a lot of money. Years ago there was a TV program about a very wealthy man who gave away a tax free million dollars to help certain deserving individuals. This was his purpose in life. Believe it or not there are a lot of people who make it their purpose in life to help others.

Personal development is for those who lead active lives, not passive:

If you are the kind of person who believes that life consists of more than a 40 hour week job; coming home at five and having dinner and then a passive night of watching TV until bedtime, then you are a good candidate for personal development. And I don’t mean to say if you do that now, you can’t change. But change is required if developing yourself is what you want.

Your personal development is in your hands and no one else. It is up to you to decide what you want to make of your life and how you plan to go about it. Here are some things to consider first:

  • What is the greatest ambition of my life?
  • What are the things I do best?
  • What is my greatest why? (Why do I want to change?)

Dream your biggest dream; make your plans; work hard to make it a reality. It will take time, but time will pass one way or the other, whether or not you decide to devote to change. The greatest secret to personal development is that it is improving just a tiny bit each day consistently over time which becomes a huge accomplishment. It is like doubling something as small as a penny each day, which seems insignificant but if you do it consistently over a period of time, it becomes a huge amount of money. So it is also with personal development; just a little gain each day and before you know it great changes will have taken place.

“Christian personal development for successful people” stands ready to help you this year, beginning right now, to become the new person you long to be. We don’t offer personal coaching; coaching is good if you can afford it; a good coach in personal development is expensive. What we do offer you is self help articles in various categories of personal development. This is an excellent approach to personal development, especially if your budget is close. As matter of fact, much of what I learned in my college days was self taught through reading and research. Don’t put it off; if you do, 2012 will come and go quickly and you will still be the same.
