“I shall not die, but live, and declare the works of the LORD. Psalm 118:17

We all know that we are going to die, but we hope that we live to die another day. Not all of us are told that we are soon going to die and have to live with that thought. Lorraine Stevenson was told several times that she was going to die, but went on to prove it would have to be another day. Lorraine battled cancer 5 times and won. She finally told her doctors to please quit telling her she was going to die.

Do we have any control over the length of our days on earth, or does God already have that date set? Read on if you would like to know the answer to that question:

According to the Bible we do have at least some control over how long we live. For example, Saul was the first king over Israel. God promised to bless him and his kingdom as long as he was faithful. Saul was unfaithful and disobedient toward God and the Scripture says he lost his life for that reason: “So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the LORD, even against the word of the LORD, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit…[rather than God]” I Chronicles 10:13.

There is quite a different story of another king over Israel recorded in 2 Kings 20:1-6: “In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. And the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz came to him, and said unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Set thine house in order; for thou shalt die, and not live. Then he [Hezekiah] turned his face to the wall, and prayed unto the Lord, saying, I beseech thee, O Lord, remember now how I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in thy sight. And Hezekiah wept sore. And it came to pass, afore Isaiah was gone out into the middle court, that the word of the Lord came to him, saying, Turn again, and tell Hezekiah the captain of my people, Thus saith the Lord, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will heal thee: on the third day thou shalt go up unto the house of the Lord. And I will add unto thy days fifteen years; and I will deliver thee and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria; and I will defend this city for mine own sake, and for my servant David’s sake.”

I think, based on the two examples above, that we do have some control over when we die. I suppose we could call it timely death and untimely death. A good example of an untimely death would be: Medical Science warns of the dangers of smoking; a person continues to smoke anyway, invites an untimely death. In fact, smokers can expect to cut about 10 years off the normal lifespan on the average. A person who takes their own life dies an untimely death. A person who is careless about the way they live invites an untimely death. Then, on the other hand, the person who has purpose in life and desires to serve God and contribute to the welfare of others might extend their life as Hezekiah, King of Israel, mentioned above. This, of course, is a timely death according to God’s best plan for life. We choose to live or die by the way we live. By choosing an unhealthy lifestyle, we are choosing to die before God’s best plan for us.

The latter apparently was the case for Lorraine. Even though she was from a family known for dying early with cancer (she lost her mother to cancer in 1971 at a young age, and then her father in 1978 also at a young age) she has been a survivor. Lorraine had her first bout with cancer in 1983 followed by four other bouts over the next few years. Through it all she continued to be faithful to the Lord, serving him and finding purpose for her life and God blessed her and kept her alive against all odds.

Lorraine says, “I have been blessed with many talents, everything from painting in watercolors and oils, to being a musician, songwriter and my latest venture of designing jewelry.  I teach a workshop once a month at the Renaissance Center here in Dickson, Tn.  I am a single woman with no children.  Cancer caused me to not be able to bear children. I now do some performing where I play my guitar and share my journey with others through testimony and music.  I gave my life over to the Lord when I was fifteen and now I am fully dedicated to him.”

It is a blessing to hear Lorraine sing her songs of praise, and encouraging hearing her share her journey of faith. If you are interested in having Lorraine come to your organization or church, she can be contacted at: maggiemae157@aol.com

One thing is certain, and that is God loves each one of us and has a purpose for our life. It is also for certain that he will keep us alive until that purpose is complete before he takes us to our heavenly home to be with him forever. There is no happiness that matches the joy and purpose of knowing that your life is centered in God’s will. Before we can have a God centered life, we must have a relationship with him through his son, Jesus Christ. I’m so thankful that Jesus saved me. I’m here to let others, like you, know of our Savior who shed his blood for us that we might come into the presence of Father God….cleansed of each and every sin.
