“There Is No Elevator To Success. You Have To Take The Stairs.” Unknown

I suppose each person has their own idea of what success means to them. To a terminally ill person, success would be to live; to a poor person, it could be to have money; to a rich person, it may be to be happy; to a celebrity it may be to have more privacy, etc. However, I believe there are 7 essentials that need be present to enhance any true success in life. Read on and see if you agree.

To me, living a life that has purpose and meaning is success. The quote, “There Is No Elevator To Success. You Have To Take The Stairs.” is true for the most part. However, people do still think there is a fast way to success and sometimes there is. When I was growing up, Elvis Presley was starting his singing career. Actually it was during my high school years, 1954, 55 & 56. In 1954, Elvis was entertaining in school gyms, in the area where I grew up, in North East Arkansas, located adjacent to Memphis, Tennessee. It only cost $1 to see Elvis in those days. My senior class wrote to Elvis, and asked him to perform for our senior prom, and he replied stating he already had commitments.

Elvis would probably have come to our prom had it been in 1954 but by 1956 he was well on his way with some top hits and a movie contract for “Love Me Tender.” Elvis certainly took the elevator to success. However, that created a lot of problems for him. His closest friends said that Elvis’ greatest problem was he was never able to deal with being Elvis Presley. It all happened far too fast, and the name Elvis Presley was far too big ever to be lived up to. Apparently the only way Elvis could cope was by using prescription drugs which in the long run ended his life at only 42 years of age.

The elevator to success, while being fast, bypasses the slower but more interesting way, just one step at a time. The song “It is the climb” nails it. Life is the climb. The excitement of being successful is the day by day, step by step climb. By the time you reach your destination, it is time to find another climb, or maybe too die.

Having said all of that, the question I’m asking myself is the title of this article: “What is success anyhow?” Since success is so many different things to so many people, we can only try to determine what the essentials are necessary to reach any measure of success. So here are 7 essentials for any success, in my own opinion:

  1. To be free
  2. To be healthy
  3. To be happy
  4. To have money to pay the bills
  5. To have meaningful relationships
  6. To live in anonymity
  7. To be prepared to die

Conclusion

Since I have written articles on most of those things, I see no need to repeat. Anyway I think you get the point without further explanation except maybe for the last two mentioned. What I mean by living in anonymity is not to be completely unknown, but rather to avoid all the attention caused by celebrity. To be prepared to die is to accept it as a natural part of living, and to be prepared for when death does come. And most importantly follow God’s instructions in his word, the Bible for living and dying. God wants us to live in peace and die in peace. The only way to do that is by having a relationship with him.
