Is 911 a Forgotten Reminder?

The aftermath of 911 was a reminder that America is vulnerable even though it is the mightiest nation on earth. For a while after 911, churches were crowded with people who came to pray for America and those families directly affected by 911. It was the hope of many that America was about to experience another “Great Awakening” resulting in a return to God. But instead, it soon was things back to normal, which indicates that 911was just a quickly forgotten reminder.

Some well known Clergy made a bold statement at the time of 911 that it was God’s judgment on America, which in turn drew a lot of criticism toward them. Whether or not it was God’s judgment, it certainly was a warning as well as a wake-up call to just how vulnerable America is in the face of a renegade bunch of terrorists who do not hesitate to murder women and children or anybody else, not does it matter to them what means they use to cause death, destruction and mayhem. It is a reminder that we as a nation need to return to God and trust  Him to protect this great nation from its growing list enemies.

There is a relative new book published in 2011, and on the New York Times bestseller list, entitled “Harbinger” which elaborates on Old Testament scripture which seems to outline the future of America, and it isn’t good. The primary passage of the Bible which is highlighted is Isaiah 9:10, “The bricks have fallen down, but we will rebuild with dressed stone; the fig trees have been felled, but we will replace them with cedars.” America, in a sense, is God’s New Israel. When Israel rejected Jesus as their Messiah, God turned to the Gentile nations to call out His Kingdom of which America has since became known as one of the world’s leading Christian nations.  In opposition to what President Obama says, America is still a Christian nation by an overwhelming majority, but a nation, like ancient Israel, who has turned away from God.

Israel’s defiance toward God was what inspired Isaiah to pen the verse. “The bricks are falling…” It is certain that God’s judgment was upon Israel for their defiance of Him as their God, which resulted ultimately in all the bricks of Israel falling in total destruction. At the time of Isaiah 9:10, it was a warning of more judgment to come if Israel didn’t repent and return to God. But instead of recognizing it for what it was, Israel was defiant, like America was after 911 and still is. They said we will rebuild but with hewn stone and cedars instead of brick and sycamore.

We have seen that same attitude in America. How many times have you heard some politician say we will rebuild stronger and better than before, even so said the President of the United States. It was a goal to build the new replacement for the twin towers, renamed the “The Freedom Tower,” at least one story taller, another show of defiance. It is also constructed to be resistant to the same things that brought down the twin towers. Rather than humbling America, the 911 tragedy has emboldened America. Rather than taking the threat seriously, we seem to have winked at it and flexed our muscle instead. Whether or not you call 911 a judgment from God, one thing is for certain, we no longer have the safety inside our borders that we once had, nor can we depend on our powerful government entirely to protect us from all outside threats. The alarming truth is that, whether we recognize it or not, we need God’s blessings and protection as a nation to endure more than ever before in history.

The serious question that we need to ask ourselves is America now following the same course of defiance as ancient Israel? If so, we, like ancient Israel, have a bleak future ahead of us. Israel ignored the warnings from God until it was too late. Hopefully. America will take notice while there’s time and turn to God, but from all indications, that is unlikely.

Conclusion

Even if America does continue its course of defiance toward God and God’s eminent judgment, it doesn’t have to include you with it. Why not protect your own destiny.
