What are your excuses for staying the same?

I’m too busy. I’m tired. There’s not enough money. I don’t have the right feelings. Others have tried and failed. I don’t have the right motivation. I don’t have the knowledge. I can’t, just cause I can’t. I’m too old. I’m too young. I’m too tall. I’m too short. I’ll miss my favorite TV show. I just don’t want to do anything.

One website lists “over 900 excuses to not go to work or school, breaking dates, doctor, missing church, diet, and taxes.” In a cartoon a doctor asks his overweight patient, who is giving excuses for not exercising, “What fits your busy schedule better, exercising 1 hour a day or being dead 24 hours a day?”

The truth is that the excuses we are making could actually be killing us, restricting us, making us miserable and cheating us out of the life we could have.

It is strange that folks had rather take the time to do things harmful to them or of lesser importance and make excuses for not making the changes to live the life they are on earth to live.

It is easy to spend all of life being overweight, addicted to drugs, tobacco and all sorts of things and give all kinds of excuses as to why to stay the same rather than making the changes that could enormously improve the quality of life.

Take time to test your excuses:

  • Are the excuses valid…be truthful?
  • Why am I making the excuses?
  • What would be the difference if I took action instead of making excuses?
  • Would I really like to change?
  • How would change improve my quality of life?
  • Would change improve my health, looks and personality?
  • If others can make changes, why not I?
  • What are the reasons I need to change and now?
  • What will be the results if I don’t make some changes?
  • Can I get some help and support to get rid of bad habits?

Ask yourself these questions and be honest with yourself; if you are honest, you will see that a shift is needed in order to have a life free of excuses and geared toward constructive change.
