Is Coronavirus a Warning for What’s Next?

According to the Bible, there is coming a time called “The beginning of sorrows” when there will be a convergence of deadly things taking place: “For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows,” Matthew 24:7-8. Notice that this verse includes pestilences. A pestilence is anything that is against mankind such as viruses.
In my lifetime, there have been several new viruses that have resulted in a devastating number of deaths. When I was an adolescent, there was the polio epidemic. A friend contacted it and was crippled by it. Polio was first discovered in 1789. It was a dreaded virile disease that left over a half million of its victims dead or crippled. It wasn’t until 1955 that Dr. Jonas Salk finally discovered a vaccine. That was a long time coming. Pray that it won’t be anywhere near that long for a vaccine for the Coronavirus.
Before my time in 1918, there was the great worldwide flu epidemic that killed approximately 100 million people. Even today there are from 25,000 to 45,000 deaths in the U.S. alone from Flu.
According to Dr. Steven Hatfield there was an upsurge in deadly viruses beginning in the 1990s that medical science had not seen before, and it was not the result of the increase of medical diagnostic technology. Form the 90s until now we have seen the SARS epidemic, the swine flu epidemic and now the coronavirus pandemic.
Dr. Steven Hatfield, virologist and biological weapons expert, said, “Coronavirus may be nature’s way of warning us of future viruses yet to come.” Some viruses have a much higher mortality rate than the Coronavirus at from 50% to 90%.We are yet to see what impact Coronavirus will have on the economy and our way of life. It is possible that it could bankrupt this country and other countries across the world. It is fairly certain that our way of life will change forever. Some are even wondering if people will ever want to be in large crowds again. This could put an end to mega churches and stadium events such as sports and concerts. Hopefully that will not be the case, but no one knows what the final impact will be.
People across the world are searching for some glimmer of hope and none can be found amidst of wars, acts of nature, violence, and disease. The Bible is the only source for a lasting hope: In Proverbs 24:14 we read, “Know that wisdom is such to your soul; if you find it, there will be a future, and your hope will not be cut off.” Jeremiah 29:11 – “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.”
I hope that one of the positive things that comes from this catastrophic world event, is that many will have the wisdom to turn to God and receive the hope He is waiting to give them. I personally received this hope many years ago and can attest to the fact that it is real. It never fades even in times like these. God wants you to have it, and in Him only can it be found.
