What are You Worth?

“For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?” – Mark 8:36-37.

When we ask the question how much is someone worth, the answer nearly always is based on how much money that person has, but the verse from the Bible above has an entirely different meaning. In fact, it indicates that there is no amount of money, gold and silver that is worth as much as one human soul. Another way a person’s worth is estimated is by how well dressed and attractive the body is. That is vanity because the actual worth of the body is less than $5.00. It is composed of inexpensive elements that come from the dust of the earth, like carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. According to the Bible, the body goes back to the dust from which it came, and the spirit [and soul] shall return unto God who gave it, Ecclesiastes 12:7.

The body dies and is buried and gradually decays becoming dust, leaving only the bones. The soul goes on to God to be judged, whether worthy of heaven or of hell. No matter how much a person gains in terms of wealth, fame and notoriety on earth, it in no way compares with the decision they make concerning their soul. Consider the value that God places on the human soul. The Bible says, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whosever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life,” John 3:16. Jesus left the glory of heaven and came down to earth in order to save your soul.

When Jesus left heaven and came to earth, He took “the form of a bond-servant.” He deserved to be a king to be bowed down to and worshiped and served by others, but instead he became a servant to serve others. The Bible says, “Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men:” Philippians 2:6-7.

I hear of people who pay a lot of money for worthless things, but Jesus paid with His life to save your soul, which is of inestimable value. How much is that worth to you?  What Jesus did for you is beyond any value that can be placed on it. He paid the ultimate price by dying on the cross for you. He “bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed,”1 Peter 2:24.

Can you place a value on a soul, which is saved from hell by the death of God’s own Son? He shed His very blood for you, which is priceless. Your soul is worth more than all the earth combined with its silver, gold and precious stones. Peter says, “you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ,”1 Peter 1:18-19. You cannot place a dollar amount on the value of your soul. There is no way its value can be expressed in physical terms.

Now the question is, what will you do with your soul? What will you give in exchange for your soul? If you had a chance to trade your soul for the wealth of the richest man on earth, would you be willing and forfeit your place in Heaven. Are you exchanging your soul for something of far less value?

Jesus told a story of a rich man in Luke 16:20-31, “And he spoke unto them, saying, the ground of a certain rich man brought forth plentifully: And he thought within himself, saying, what shall I do, because I have no room where to bestow my fruits? And he said, this will I do: I will pull down my barns, and build greater; and there will I bestow all my fruits and my goods.  And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, and be merry. But God said unto him, thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee: then whose shall those things be, which thou has provided?” So is he that lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich towards God.”

I believe this same story is continued in Luke 16:20-26: “And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, and desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table: moreover, the dogs came and licked his sores. And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into heaven where Abraham was: the rich man also died, and was buried; and in hell he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and seeing Abraham afar off, and Lazarus with him, he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime received thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from here to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from there. Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou would send him to my father’s house: For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment. Abraham saith unto him, they have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them. And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent. And he said unto him, if they hear not Moses and the prophets, [God’s Word] neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

What will it take to persuade you of the value of your soul? Will you listen today while you still have life or will you wait like the rich man until it is too late? Today you have heard the truth about the value of your soul. Redeeming its value is on God’s terms and according to His timing. If today God is speaking to you, please don’t put Him off until a more convenient time. Here is what God is saying to you right now: “For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I assisted thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation,” 2 Corinthians 6:2.
