The Truth About Abortion

“…. Therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live: 20That thou mayest love the Lord thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him: for he is thy life, and the length of thy days:” Deuteronomy 30:19-20.

A woman was carrying a large sign reading “We want Roe versus Wade not Jesus” to protest the Supreme court decision to overturn Roe versus Wade. The Supreme Court, on June 24, 2022, handed down a decision which states that there is no longer a federal constitutional right to an abortion. I think the sign, tells it all. Those in favor of abortion are not concerned about what is right; they are interested in what they want and what is convenient based on women’s right to choose. It seems strange that a woman has the right to kill her unwanted child before birth but not after birth.

President Biden weighed in on the Supreme Court’s decision: “It’s a sad day for the court and for the country,” Biden went on to say in a White House address, the ruling was taking the country back 150 years. Biden promised to go on fighting for women’s right to choose. Ironically, Mr. President, you are saying that it is sad that women no longer have the right to kill her unborn baby if she does not want it. No! what is sad Mr. President is that women have chosen to kill 63,459,781 babies since Roe Versus Wade went into law in 1973.

Norma McCorvey was the woman designated as “Jane Roe,” the plaintiff in Roe versus Wade, which was the United States Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in the United States. On January 22, 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court declared that it was unconstitutional for the state of Texas to prohibit doctors from performing abortions.

According to a sworn affidavit on the 15 day of March 2000, Norma McCorvey said, “Because of my role in Roe versus Wade, how that decision came about, and my experiences working at abortion clinics, I can provide the Court with information and a perspective unavailable from other sources. I have a compelling interest in this litigation. My case was wrongfully decided and has caused great harm to the women and children of our nation. The controversy surrounding Roe versus wade has to do with when life begins. Decades ago, in 1981, during a government hearing, Dr. Watson A, Bowes of the University of Colorado Medical School stated, “the beginning of a single human life is from a biological point of view a simple and straightforward matter — the beginning is conception. Today there is more evidence than ever that unborn children are human beings. An article posted on September 14, 2021, by Katrina Furth, Ph.D., gives 15 scientific reasons to support that fact: 15 Scientific Facts That Prove Unborn Children are Human Beings – LifeNews.com.

Still, the question in the minds of many is, when does a fetus become a human being? According to science, no specific point during pregnancy indicates a fetus or embryo becomes a living human being.

Science Points to Fetal Personhood: “The idea that to perform an abortion, the child must be dehumanized is not scientifically tenable. Humanity is established from 3d ultrasounds, complete imaging studies, responses to pain and other stimuli, prenatal surgery successes, and the wealth of biological evidence that has arisen in last 50 years. A secular biological overview will reveal that a fetus is a genetically unique human, dependent on oxygen and food sources, delivered through an umbilical cord, not unlike an adult human on life support. The Supreme Court did not legally ban abortion in the Supreme Court-issued decision in Dobbs v. Jackson. The decision states: “the Constitution does not confer a right to abortion. Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pa. v. Casey must be overruled, and the authority to regulate abortion must be returned to the people and their elected representatives.” Now, the responsibility falls upon each state to decide concerning abortion. In general, rules have exceptions. When states decide on their abortion laws, careful consideration is needed to determine exceptions as to when abortion is acceptable. One exception most of us would agree on is when the mother’s life is in danger.

Ironically, Hilary Clinton said, “An unborn child hours before delivery has no constitutional rights. Is she right? Not exactly. She might want to take a look at the Constitution of the United States; section 1 of the the14th Amendment says, “a state can’t deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.” According to the 14th Amendment, all people have the right to life and the protection of laws, including the unborn. 

Harry Blackmun, the man who gave us Roe versus Wade, wrote on page 156 of his document expressing the majority opinion on Roe versus Wade, “If a fetus is a person, then that right should protect her or him as well.” “The appellee and certain amici argue that the fetus is a “person” within the language and meaning of the Fourteenth Amendment. In support of this, they outline at length and in detail the well-known facts of fetal development. If this suggestion of personhood is established, the appellant’s case, of course, collapses, for the fetus’ right to life would then be guaranteed specifically by the Amendment.” Justice Blackburn bypassed this by deciding that a fetus is not a person. That ignores the fact that there is a heartbeat less than a month after conception, and after ten weeks, there are fingerprints and the ability to feel pain. That controverts the supposition that life only starts after birth. The only defining moment for the beginning of life is at conception, at which time there is a gradual development of a living human being. In legal terms, when a fetus dies, it is counted as a human death and is protected by law, unless, at least in the past, when abortion ended the life.

What does the Bible say about abortion? While the Bible does not use the modern term abortion, many verses express God’s view of the value of human life, including the life of the unborn child. According to (Genesis 9:6; Psalm 36:9) life is a gift from God. Therefore, God considers life precious, including the lives of the unborn. We know this is true because of God’s law given to Israel as stated in Exodus 21:22, 23: “If men should struggle with each other and they hurt a pregnant woman, and she gives birth prematurely but no fatality results, the offender must pay the damages imposed on him by the husband of the woman; and he must pay it through the judges. But if a fatality does occur, then you must give life for life.” Therefore, according to the Bible, in those days, killing an unborn child incurred the death sentence.

According to the Bible, when does life begin? God’s view in His Word, the Bible, is an unborn child is a distinct person at conception. God makes no distinction between an unborn baby and one that is born. Evidence of this is found in (Psalm 139:16) where King David said, “Your eyes even saw me as an embryo.” God considered David a person when he was an embryo before he was born.

Jerimiah the prophet is another example where God recognized individuals before they were born: “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born, I sanctified you. I made you a prophet to the nations,” Jeremiah 1:5. Further evidence of a viable human life before birth is found in Luke 1:41; 2:12, 16; Luke uses the same word to describe and unborn as he does for the newborn.

According to the Bible, abortion is a mortal sin. Does God forgive those who have an abortion? Yes! “For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee,” Psalm 86:5. God forgives all sin except for the sin of the blasphemy of the Holy Spirit, which is denying Jesus as savior. We are all sinners, so a person does not have to live with the guilt after having an abortion if they accept God’s forgiveness. According to the Bible, God removes our transgressions as far as the East is from the West, Psalm 103:12.
