Taking Individual Responsibility
“The most important thought that ever occupied my mind is that of my individual responsibility to God.” – Daniel Webster.
Please keep reading to learn how you can unlock your greatest potential. Taking individual responsibility allows you to build a better life. The questions we need to ask ourselves are, am I the one in charge of how I live my life or am I just a shadow of someone else? Am I taking individual responsibility for my life or letting others decide for me? How we answer those questions determines the quality of our lives and our future. Perhaps we need a wake-up call. Instead of blaming everything on someone or something else, isn’t it time we decide who we want to be and take individual responsibility for it?
Freedom of choice is a God-given privilege. The first and foremost choice in life is whether we choose God or not. If you decide not to recognize God for who he is, nothing else matters because everything will soon pass away, including you. The Bible says, “For what shall it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? Whosoever, therefore, shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels,” Mark 8:36-38.
It is always sad to hear that a well-known person has died and that they were only known for their fame or wealth and never for their relationship with God. When anyone leaves this life without Christ, this life is all they will ever have; they forfeit eternal life in the presence of God. According to Scripture, they will be separated from the love of God for all eternity.
Keep reading to find out how you can chart a different course in your life by accepting individual responsibility and making the right choices. You can find a new sense of purpose and peace in a very unpeaceable and confusing world.
The reason for taking Individual Responsibility: Life can be meaningless and aimless, and many live that way, plagued with anxiety and depression and with no hope for their future. That is the reason for taking individual responsibility for your life. If we don’t have direction in life, we will be like a ship at sea without a rudder. Taking individual responsibility should never be confused with getting rich or accumulating material things. Those things will never fill the void in the heart. From the earliest years in life, everyone is on a quest to discover what makes life worthwhile, and many never find it, but you can today if you are willing.
- Taking individual responsibility is first and foremost placing our faith in Jesus: According to the Bible, each one of us has the personal responsibility to repent of our sins and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ: “The time is fulfilled. And the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and belief in the gospel [the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus],Mark 1:15. Then says the Word of God to glorify the Lord with good works, Ephesians 2:10. Furthermore, the Bible says, “Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life” 1 John 5:12. Those who choose to reject the truth of God “are without excuse” according to Romans 1:20. We cannot avoid our responsibility to exercise faith in Christ and not receive the eternal consequences. Everyone who rejects God will one day stand before Him to give an account, Revelation 20:11. People may choose not to bend a knee to Jesus in this life. Still, there is a time coming when all will recognize Him as Lord and Savior and bow to Him, but it will be too late: “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth;” Philippians 2:10.
- Taking individual responsibility is second, and equally as important, which is committing to the leadership of God’s Holy Spirit: When we become believers, we receive the Holy Spirit of God as our Helper, Teacher, and Friend. He gives each believer direct access to God and seals the believer’s promised inheritance of eternal life with God in heaven. His presence offers believers the greatest gift of all outside of eternal life, which is guidance and wisdom. From Him, believers receive spiritual gifts to empower them to serve God in this life and to bear the fruit of the Spirit, which according to Galatians 5:22-23 is “Love, Joy, peace, patience, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, meekness, and temperance.” Those are the attributes of the abundant life Jesus promises all believers, John 10:10. It is when we commit to the leadership of the Holy Spirit that He does His work in our lives. We grow in understanding and in our relationship with God.
Taking individual responsibility is allowing God to make you into the person He created you to be: The first step before God can make you into the person that He created you to be is that He must first take away everything that has made you the way you are and created a separation between you and Him.
To begin with, if you are living with a façade to get others to accept you, you are keeping God from doing His work in you. That is missing out on what could be the best part of your life. God never creates someone to be someone else; He creates unique individuals to fulfill His purpose for their life. Trying to be something or someone we’re not will always cause stress and fear of being exposed for who we are, which will always bring discouragement and depression. To defeat that, determine to be who you are and let God do His work of renewal in you. No one will be perfect because we are human, but we will be authentic.
God holds each of us accountable to fulfill His purpose in our life, so we need to stop living for the approval of others and surrender all to the sanctification of the Lord. The Bible calls sanctification God’s work in renewing us; it means “set apart.” In other words, God wants to set us apart to be different from anyone else so that we might fully be in tune with His purpose. He uniquely made you with certain gifts, and you miss out on His best purpose for your life if you try to be otherwise.
Final thoughts: Ask yourself the question: Am I living for God’s approval or the approval of others? Would others agree or disagree with my answer? If you feel like you have never had meaning and purpose or feel uninspired or lost in a world filled with confusion, you are taking the wrong path.
