GOD IS SO GOOD
“O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.” – Psalm 34:8
My wife Margaret and I decided instead of exchanging gifts this Christmas, we would give the money to the Lottie Moon Christmas offering. Please don’t misunderstand; it is not because we are that good but because God has been so good to us. My first wife, Sharron, who died in 2005, her grandfather told us when we were first married that when you get married, it is like holding a screen before you and each hole in the screen represents a need you will have. Well, it has taken a long time, but I think most of the holes have been filled in, but only because of the goodness of God, who has always provided for my needs and has often given me the desires of my heart.
I never imagined I could travel to all 50 states, but in June of 2023, Margaret and I have reservations to visit Alaska, which will complete all fifty states for me. I also have had the privilege to visit several other countries. The greatest blessing was visiting Israel a couple of years ago.
Margaret, my second wife, whom I married five years ago, is one of the greatest blessings of my life. She came into my life as an answer to prayer; I believe with all my heart that God, in His goodness, sent her to me at a crucial time in my life.
I don’t mean to say there have been no bad times in my life. I have had a few. However, through it all, I believe the verse that says, “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose” (Romans 8:28). That verse does not mean all the things that happen to us are good; it means God is so good that in the summary of all things experienced in life in the end will turn out good for those who love God and are called according to His purpose.
I firmly believe in the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering; 100% goes to help missionaries and their causes. It is incredible the price missionaries are willing to pay to serve the Lord in a foreign land. The following story is one of those brave and committed missionaries: “One of God’s faithful missionaries, Allen Gardiner, experienced many physical difficulties and hardships throughout his service to the Savior. Despite his troubles, he said, “While God gives me strength, failure will not daunt me. In 1851, at age 57, he died of disease and starvation while serving on Picton Island at the southern tip of South America. When his body was found, his diary lay nearby. It bore the record of hunger, thirst, wounds, and loneliness. The last entry in his little book showed the struggle of his shaking hand as he tried to write legibly. It read, ‘I am overwhelmed with a sense of the goodness of God.’”
I am disgusted with myself sometimes when I allow temporal things to disturb me. We may often forget those final words of that great 23 Psalm: “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” Jesus intended for us to have a blessed life on earth. He said, “I come that ye may have life and have it more abundantly” (John 10:10). The promise of Jesus is a follow-up to the 23 Psalms mentioned above: “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.3He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. 4Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff comfort me. 5preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. 6Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”
