Having a dream and then working hard to make it come true is a privilege we have in the great country of America, and it can happen in other parts of the world also. It happens when we understand “The lessons we must learn to bring us closer to the power of the dream”.
I must first tell you that I have my dreams, actually only three. They are not private so I don’t mind sharing them with you. You will find the first one of them in many places on this website:

That goal is what it says: to have a million dollars in a determined amount of time which is by 2020 for the good of others. My goal is to have a million dollar foundation to provide food, clothing, education and an opportunity to hear the gospel message of Jesus Christ. That is why there is a donation button in the navigational bar of this website. Your help would be appreciated.
The second one is a goal to share the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ to a million people or more through this website and by other means.
My third one and last goal is to be completely debt free which I’m close to reaching presently.
I want you also to adopt your own dreams and join in with me to make them come true. Perhaps one is to have a million dollars come your way for what ever reason that is important to you.
There are four universally accepted steps in reaching goals:
- Write your goals down.
- Plan a way to start toward your goal.
- Understand the price you must pay.
- Look at your goals every day.
Yes it is true that dreams don’t often come true by themselves; they require quite some effort. I hope this article will help you to learn the power of the dream from the experiences of others. Perhaps they will motivate you to start to fulfill your own dreams.
THE DREAM
Celine Dion said it in her song “THE POWER OF THE DREAM”, performed at the opening ceremony of the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games, “The lessons we must learn to bring us closer to the power of the dream”. One by one every lesson we learn brings us closer to the power of our dream.
Personal development is a series of educational lessons, educating a person in things you never get in college, but things that prepare you for success. You learn how to be the best person that you can be, how to be concerned about others before yourself, how to be unselfish and to be giving; just one tiny step at a time that continues to build day by day bringing you closer and closer to the power of your dream.
Martin Luther King had a compelling dream. His life was cut short before he realized his dream but his dream lives on today in the hearts of millions who long to see a better world. How true in this case are the words of Celine’s song: “The power of the dream sets us free”.
A. P. Giannini was born in 1870, San Jose, CA and Died: 1949, San Mateo, CA. Giannini’s parents were Italian immigrants to the United States, originally from near Genoa, Liguria. They were poor and un-educated. Giannini started his business career by pushing a banana cart up and down the streets of San Francisco. One day he shared his dream to build a financial institution with his family; they laughed at him and told him to stick to what he knew, pushing his Banana cart. Nevertheless nothing was about to deter him from his dream, not family or friends or anything else.
He attended Heald College, in San Francisco, California. His first occupation after college was as a commission merchant and produce dealer for farms in the Santa Clara Valley. In that position he found established banks unwilling to take on his or the farmers business.
Determined to fill a need Giannini opened the Bank of Italy in a former San Francisco saloon on October 17, 1904. Deposits on that first day totaled $8,780. An early difficulty to overcome was the San Francisco earthquake of 1906. However, the earthquake actually helped Giannini gain something of a loan monopoly.
After the earthquake, he moved the vault’s money to his home outside the fire zone in then-rural San Mateo, an 18-mile drive by horse and wagon. The raging fires severely heated the vaults of other big banks which had the money in them. Opening them immediately would ruin the money, so they had to be kept closed for weeks. Because of this, Giannini was one of the few who were able to provide loans at the time.
Giannini was forced to run his bank from a plank across two barrels in the street for a time. Giannini made loans on a handshake to anyone who was interested in rebuilding. Years later, he would recount with pride that every single loan was repaid.
Through the years Giannini merged his bank with other small banks and finally in 1928 he merged with the Bank of America, Los Angeles.
Today we see the fruit of this one man’s dream and his determination to reach it; it is called “Bank of America”, the largest financial institution in the world. A. P. Giannini built his reputation, the produce business and later his bank holdings by being fair and honest in dealing with people.
There was an ordinary man who lived in a small town in the backwoods state of Arkansas who had a dream. He started a small dry goods store and began to expand it. Then he built another store in another town and then another and so on until today “Wal-Mart” is the largest corporation in America even overshadowing the giant, General Motors. What was the difference in Sam Walton and most people: he had a dream and would let nothing stop him.
Who would ever thought one man, Michel Dell, had any chance going up against the computer giant, IBM and its thousands of employees? He did and he won. Yes Michael Dell proved the power of the dream.
Do you understand the power of the dream? Selene said in her song, “Deep within each heart lies a magic spark…” Have you discovered that magic spark, the dream that lies deep within your heart? How powerful is your dream? Is it powerful enough to drive you on regardless of the odds, the storms, the ups and downs or anything else that might come along which would sidetrack the ordinary person? On a scale of 1 to 10 how do you stack up?
The things that would easily derail most people will not stop a person bent on success.
I would like to ask you to do something for yourself.

Maybe you can’t fully identify with every one of these at this time but it will give you some idea what it is going to take to fulfill your dream. It is a goal to work toward which is the object of personal development. No one ever said it would be easy. It is hard but then life is hard in general so why not focus your energy on accomplishing your dream.
Remember that personal development as well as fulfilling our dream is just taking little steps one at a time one day at a time. It is as simple as making the right decisions rather than the wrong ones consistently. We have a purpose for being on this earth that is far more than we could possibly anticipate at the present. If you have a dream and it is a noble dream, then the God of this universe laid it on your heart. He is all powerful; not only does he give the dream but he can also give the means for it to come to fruition but he leaves the choice to each person.
It is true that you already have “a spark that lies deep within your heart…” but perhaps you have not fully uncovered it yet. I suggest that you get a piece of paper and pen and find a place to be alone. Begin to write down everything that comes to mind that you want to accomplish and everything you would like to be; it may take some time and a lot of things on the list but when you come to the very one that really stirs your emotions to tears, then you have discovered your dream and the purpose for your life.
Others may make fun of your dream as has been the case for many others, but that is OK because you know it can come true and that you are willing to pursue it for the rest of your life if necessary.
