Feel Disillusioned, Disturbed and depressed? There’s Hope!

Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.” – Psalm 42:11

Written by Jimmie Burroughs

What’s the answer to the questions in the quote above: Why do I feel the way I feel? Why am I so disturbed? The truth is, there is no hope in this present world If you do not have a relationship with the creator of all life, the Lord.  Think about it: How certain is your future? Do you have any confidence at all as to what tomorrow might bring? Listen to some famous people who rejected God concerning their future:

  • Winston Churchill, the man whose vision and battle cry was to “never give up,” said on his deathbed, “I am convinced that there is no hope. I’m bored with it all.”
  • Voltaire the atheist, “I am abandoned by God and man! I shall go to hell! O Christ, O Jesus Christ!”
  • Thomas Hobbs the infidel said in his last moments, “I am taking a fearful leap into the dark.”
  • Mirabeau, who led the French revolution, when dying cried out, “Give me more time; I don’t want to think of eternity.”
  • Charles the ninth, the bloody tyrant cried, “I know not where I am, I am lost forever.”
  • Charteres said, “I would gladly give one hundred and fifty thousand dollars, to have it proved there is no hell”
  • Tallyrand said, “I am suffering the pangs of the damned!”
  • Edwards said, “I’m lost! Lost! Lost!”, “Damned! Damned forever!!”  His agony was so great that he tore hair out of his head as he died saying, “I am damned to all eternity!”
  • Cesare Borgia at the point of death said, “When I lived, I provided for everything but death; now I must die, and I am unprepared.”

Those were the last words of the atheist, infidels and unbelievers. Now listen to those who had their hopes in God:

  • D.L. Moody who shook two continents for God said in the failing moments of his life, “Earth is receding. Heaven is opening. God is calling me!
  • John Wesley, founder of the Methodist Church when dying said, “Best of all God is with us!”
  • Martin Luther when dying said, “Into thy hands I commend my spirit; God of truth thy has redeemed me!
  • John Knox, the Scottish reformer, when dying uttered these piercing words and then died: “Live in Christ, die in Christ, and the flesh need not fear death. Come Lord Jesus; I commit body, soul and spirit unto thy hands!”
  • Augustus Toplady, author of the great hymn “Rock of Ages ” said in his last moments, “I enjoy heaven already in my soul. My prayers are all converted into praises.
  • Blues singer Bessie Smith died saying, “I’m going, but I’m going in the name of the Lord.”
  • Billy Graham notes that when the great saint Joseph Everett was dying, he said, “GLORY! GLORY! GLORY!” and continued exclaiming “GLORY!” for over twenty-five minutes until he was whisked away by angels to the gates of heaven.

It is up to each of us to decide where we want to place our hope. Will you cede with the atheist, infidels and unbelievers who die without any hope, or will you join with the millions who have received Jesus as Lord and savior? Jesus is waiting for you. He is inviting you to be a part of His eternal kingdom. He has good plans for your future: “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” – Jeremiah 29:11

I invite you to join me; my hope is in the Lord. I trusted Him as my savior many years ago. He is my source of hope. Without Him, I would be lost and fearful of the future. What about you? If you were to die today, where would you spend eternity? The Bible says it would be either heaven or hell. It can be heaven. Don’t put it off another minute. You have no assurance of tomorrow. The Bible declares, “Today is the day of salvation.”

“Do you measure your life by the world’s yardstick or by Christ’s words? If Christ is not Lord of your life today, you can be guaranteed that you will be a person of no hope when you die.
