A New Self in 90 Days, Introduction
Transform Your Life Just One Day at a Time
“Put on a new self, created after the likeness of God.” Ephesians 4:24 NIV
“I am not what I ought to be; I am not what I should be; I am not what I could be; by God’s grace, I am not what I am going to be.” – W. A. Creswell
Most people desire to be a better person; however, a person has to know what it takes to become a better person if they are ever to achieve that goal; otherwise, it is impossible. “How to Become a Better Person in 90 Days” was written to give those ready to take action a blueprint for achieving their goal of becoming a better person and explaining why it matters. The late Jim Rohn, a leading teacher on Personal development, said, “A person attracts success by the person they become.” That is true. However, there are far more benefits than that, which is the subject of “Anew You in 90 Days.”
We need to ask ourselves, “What do I want to be; not what do I want to do. Or what do I want to get?” I’m not what I’m going to become requires change. Are you ready for a change? How would you like to be a brand-new self with a brand-new beginning? William James said, “The world we see that seems so insane is the result of a belief system that is not working. To perceive the world differently, we must be willing to change our belief system, let the past slip away, expand our sense of now, and dissolve the fear in our minds.” William James, the son of a theologian, was considered the greatest philosopher of his day. When you consider that Mr. James made the quote more than a hundred years ago, it makes you wonder just how much more of a mess the world is in today and how much more we need to change how we think and live.
We may have very little influence on the world’s direction, but we have much control over our life’s direction. Are you ready to proclaim, “I am not what I ought to be; I am not what I should be; I am not what I could be; by God’s grace, I am not what I am going to be?” Get started on putting on a new self. Relax, commit yourself to the 90-day journey, and never look back. On average, it takes about ten minutes of your time to read each article. That is a small price for the knowledge you will gain over the next 90 days by reading one small section daily.
There are two approaches to personal development, secular and spiritual. Secular personal development is based on forming new habits that lead to thinking and doing things differently. This approach has been proven to be effective. However, spiritual, personal development is different in that it emphasizes an inward transformation as opposed to an outward one. This book will be a help to anyone who reads it. However, the primary emphasis is building on a firm foundation that requires a relationship with God through His Son, Jesus Christ.
This book is not intended to replace the Holy Bible, the ultimate guide to living. Although, this book uses portions of Scripture as the basis for each article. The emphasisis the same as the Bible, which is on being, not doing. Nevertheless, the practical result of being is thinking and doing things differently.
Let it be understood that when a person receives Jesus into their life, they immediately become a new self. However, that is just the beginning. The new self continues to evolve over a lifetime. The Bible calls this sanctification. Sanctification sets one apart from the old self one once was and brings on a new self fully committed to God and His purpose for life. This process is noted in Romans 12:1-2: “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”
“A New Self in 90 Days” does not mean you will be all you can be in that time, but you will have a good start in attaining that goal. It is an effort to give you knowledge concerning renewing your mind and how you think. From the Christian perspective, when we understand the need for change, we can commit those things to God for His help in bringing about renewal. Sanctification requires cooperation with God through our commitment to Him to bring about the results of becoming a new person.
When I look back over my life, it is hard for me to believe how much differently I view things today. The gradual and serious change began when I became interested in becoming a better self. If you are interested in success and advancing in every area of your life, you must determine to become a better self. The objective of this book is to help you do just that.
The King James Version of the Holy Bible is the primary source for the basic support of the topics in this book. It would be impossible to identify all the other resources since the book has evolved from thousands of sermons, Bible studies I have prepared and heard, seminars I’ve attended, and many personal experiences. However, I received much insight over the years from some specific resources: How to Stop Worrying and Start Living; How to Win Friends and Influence People, by Dale Carnegie; Think and Grow Rich, by Napoleon Hill; Better Than Good, by ZigZiglar; The Five Love Languages, by Gary Chapman and more recently lectures by Jim Rohn on personal development.
One of my favorite quotes on personal development is the one listed above: “A person attracts success by the person they become” – Jim Rohn. I believe that is true, but it has only been in recent years that there has been a significant push toward becoming a better self as a means to success.
How to Use This Book
How we approach any endeavor determines its success or failure. “A New Self in 90 Days” contains 90 short articles. Each article addresses a specific topic in five sections:
- A Relationship with God
- Marriage & Family
- Money & Building Wealth
- Personal Growth
- Human Relations
Mastering these will help you discover your life values and skills, determining your life purpose. The objective is to help you deal with life issues effectively, enhancing your life and providing you with a fuller and more meaningful way of living. There is much taught here and much to be learned. However, learning for the sake of learning could be more effective. When you practice what you are learning, it then becomes beneficial.
You should take 90 days to read the book, which requires reading only one small designated section each day (which takes around 10 minutes, depending on how fast you read). For me, a good time to read is early in the morning. This gives the day to contemplate and to begin practicing, when applicable, the things learned. If that does not work for you, you might use a break, lunch hour, before bedtime, or whatever best suits your schedule.
Breaking old habits and forming new ones usually takes around 21 days. Stay encouraged if there is little noticeable change in your life at first because it requires time for a complete shift in how you live. If you continue for 90 days, more than likely, there will be a significant change, but on the other hand, a significant change could take up to a year or more, depending on individual commitment.
The first section of this study deals with a relationship with God, which sets the foundation for a new self. While I desire anyone reading this book to benefit, I must clarify that an effective new self does not happen by self-effort alone; only with God’s help can we experience the new self He intended. I hope you will have determined by completing this study that a relationship with God is right for you. Nevertheless, there is no pressure; the decision is entirely yours. The principles taught will be helpful for anyone interested in becoming more.
Most people desire to be more than they are. A recent study determined that while people realize the qualities they want, they often do not try to achieve them. Looking back, they may also regret not being the person they should have been to fulfill the responsibilities and obligations presented to them in life. If these things concern you, it is not too late to change.
Finally, this book is about something other than becoming wealthy or having more material things. It is about being your best self and living content with or without excessive wealth and material things.
