“A 50-something year old Muslim man arrived at his seat on a crowded flight and immediately didn’t want the seat. The seat was next to an elderly white woman reading her Bible.
Disgusted, the Muslim man immediately summoned the flight attendant and demanded a new seat. The man said “I cannot sit here next to this infidel. The flight attendant said “Let me see if I can find another seat.” [Note: Before my Muslim friends get upset, this also could have been a Christian man in his 50s who refused to sit by an elderly Arab Muslim reading the Koran. Bad manners are cross cultural and cross religions.]
After checking, the flight attendant returned and stated “There are no more seats in economy, but I will check with the captain and see if there is something in first class.”
About 10 minutes went by and the flight attendant returned and stated “The captain has confirmed that there are no more seats in economy, but there is one in first class. It is our company policy to never move a person from economy to first class, but being that it would be some sort of scandal to force a person to sit next to an UNPLEASANT person, the captain agreed to make the switch to first class.”
Before the irate Muslim man could say anything, the attendant gestured to the elderly woman and said, “Therefore ma’am, if you would so kindly retrieve your personal items, we would like to move you to the comfort of first class as the captain doesn’t want you to sit next to an unpleasant person.”
Passengers in the seats nearby began to applaud while some gave a standing ovation.”
All of us at one time or the other has been unpleasant to be around, but it is always at our own expense, though often directed toward another. To be around an unpleasant person is a task. Unpleasantness breaks up marriages, ends friendships and marks a person as hard to be around.
A blog writer was talking about this subject and he mentioned a movie star, who has starred in some great movies, and I for one have enjoyed his movies, but she said this person in real life is so negative and unpleasant to be around that no one wants to be around him for long.
So, it begs the question as to why anyone would want to be unpleasant rather than pleasant. I ask myself: Am I unpleasant to be around? In order to truthfully answer that question, I really have to be objective as I go over the way I treat others. To be honest there have been times that I have been unpleasant to others in the not so far distant past; the thought came to mind that I don’t want be that way, and with God’s help I won’t be. Being honest with ourselves on how we are is the first step to improvement in personal growth. Even after years of teaching personal development I am sometimes amazed at myself as to how much more I need to learn and practice what I learn.
Conclusion
Remember, being an Unpleasant person Isn’t Cool. If your desire is to have meaningful relationships, enjoy success, and live a fulfilled life, then personal development is for you. It is true that some stumble upon success, and have a lot of money, but maybe they still do not enjoy their success or have fulfillment in their life. That is the difference personal development can make. The time you spend improving yourself is time never wasted.
My greatest help in my journey towards fulfillment in life comes from my relationship with God. He has filled that vacuum of longing for something in my heart that can only be filled by him, and has enabled me to know myself and my needs. He has given direction and purpose in my life. Honestly, without him I would be nothing.
