Perception…something to think about…

Washington, D.C., Metro Station on a cold January morning in 2007.

The man with a violin played six Bach pieces for about 45 minutes. During that time approximately two thousand people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.
After 3 minutes: a middle aged man noticed there was a musician playing.  He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds and then hurried to meet his schedule.
4 minutes later: The violinist received his first dollar; a woman threw the money in the hat and, without stopping, continued to walk.
6 minutes: A young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again.
10 minutes: A 3-year old boy stopped but his mother tugged him along hurriedly.  The kid stopped to look at the violinist again, but the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head all the time.  This action was repeated by several other children.  Every parent, without exception, forced their children to move on quickly.
45 minutes: The musician played continuously.  Only 6 people stopped and listened for a short while.  About 20 gave money but continued to walk at their normal pace.  The man collected a total of $32.
1 hour: He finished playing and silence took over.  No one noticed.  No one applauded, nor was there any recognition.

No one knew this, but the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the greatest musicians in the world.  He played one of the most intricate pieces ever written, with a violin worth $3.5 million dollars.  Two days before Joshua Bell sold out a theater in Boston where the seats averaged $200.00.

This is a true story.  Joshua Bell playing incognito in the metro station was organized by the Washington Post as part of a social experiment about perception, taste and people’s priorities.
The questions raised:  In a common-place environment, at an inappropriate hour, do we perceive beauty? Do we stop to appreciate it?  Do we recognize talent in an unexpected context?

One conclusion reached from this experiment could be this:  If we do not have a moment to stop and listen to one of the best musicians in the world, playing some of the finest music ever written, with one of the most beautiful instruments ever made, how many other things are we missing?

A man and a woman enter a room full of people. The woman can tell you what every woman in the room is wearing. The man on the other hand can tell you the most attractive women and whether they have a large bosom. The perceptive person can tell you just about everything about the people in the room as well as the room.

Perception, just how important is it for personally development. The way we see things determines how we act on them. If we only see the negative side of life, we are generally negative in our actions. If we see the positive side of life we become positive in our actions. Actions depend on perception. What we see and how we respond to what we see will determine how we experience life and the quality of life that we experience.

Some go through life with their brain addled by alcohol and drugs while others are so preoccupied with everyday responsibility that they seldom are able to see the beauty all around them. How much are we missing…a lot?

Learning to be conscious to everything requires some practice. It requires us to quit being preoccupied with everything and focus on things that are going on around us. It means living life rather than being controlled by it.

I was down on the pier that extends over 100 yards out into the Gulf of Mexico last evening. The sunset was gorgeous the ocean looked like golden pond as the last rays of sunshine danced on the surface.

I turned to look on the other side of the pier and it was hard to determine which was the most beautiful because there was a full moon just above the horizon of the ocean. The water had a dark blue color and the light of the moon shimmered as streaks of silver on the water. There was a narrow runway that ran off the main pier and at the end of it was a lamp post with a lamp that looked like what you would see on commercial dock in a movie. What a romantic setting I thought; the only think lacking was the presence of a young couple embracing.

I turned to the couple beside me and said have you noticed the view on the other side and they turned and the lady said, “oh I hadn’t noticed…thank you.” They strolled down the runway for a closer view. Later as I was leaving they thanked me for pointing it out.

There is so much in life to enjoy that is free if we only take time to perceive it as we travel along. I think with age I am much more perceptive. It seems that things I had really not paid much attention too before are much more interesting and I see beauty now that I would not have taken time to notice before.

Life can be a rat race or it can be an adventure. In the last 4 years I have traveled in 37 states in my motorhome looking for beauty and searching for sights I’d heard of but never seen in real life. I took what is called the Grand Tour of the west.

The Grand Tour for me began on the south rim of Grand Canyon, Arizona. From there I traveled to four points. This is the only place in the United States that you can stand in one spot and be in four states. The trip took about ten days as I traveled to New Mexico and then up through Colorado and over the Rocky mountains and then into Utah where you can drive a hundred miles sometimes between service stations.

Utah has an abundance of national parks and I visited most of them as I made my way down to the north rim of Grand Canyon where the tour ended. The north rim of Grand Canyon is so different from the south side; it is very primitive and remote. There is one hotel lodge and a RV park and that is it. This was May 15, the first day the north rim was open for the season. There were still deep drifts of snow and it was rather cool. The view from the north side of the canyon is spectacular. One day I would like to write a detailed description of all the beauty I saw on the Grand Tour.

There is beauty and interesting things every day to behold if we just take the time. Every person you meet and take time to chat with adds a little to the amazing experiences of life. Take time as the old cliché states to smell the roses as you travel through life. Learn the value of perception in your life. Leave a comment

    I have learned new things through your site. One other thing I’d prefer to say is newer pc os’s are likely to allow a lot more memory to be used, but they also demand more ram simply to operate.
