The Greatest Decision in Life

“You are only one decision away from a totally different life.”

Written by Jimmie Burroughs

There is one single decision that you can make today that will change your life forever, and I place the emphasis on forever. if you consistently act on this decision, it will bring you more love, joy, peace than you can possibly imagine for the rest of your life.

Ignoring this decision can lead to a life without joy and fulfilment even for those considered very successful. Tony Robins, in his book “Unshakable,” said, he had talked to many Billionaires and had discovered that some were the most miserable people in the world. This seems ironic since they had amassed enough money to buy anything they wanted. He mentioned a celebrity that we all loved, Robin Williams. Robin excelled in everything he ever attempted to do, while many never excel at anything. Robin could make others laugh while he struggled with drugs, alcohol and stress. Even with all his success, he could not find any satisfaction. Instead of his success leading him to a life filled with joy and fulfilment, it led him to the end of a rope. He hung himself in his own home leaving his family in agony, heartbreak and grief.

The reason I want to share “The Most Important Decision in Life” with you, is because for more than sixty years it has been a life changer for me. It has been the foundation for making every other major decision. It has allowed me to fulfill nearly every desire of my heart.

What the world considers success falls very short of true success. What good is any wealth or so-called success if at the end of life, it leaves you feeling empty and unaccomplished.

Sometimes we assume that people who have unlimited wealth are very happy, forgetting that money can never buy true happiness. The following is a couple of examples of those born into wealthy families whose lives turned out to be filled with drugs, alcohol, or emotional and physical hardships that made their lives miserable.

Perhaps you saw the movie based on a true-life story of Christina Crawford, “Mommy Dearest.” Christiana was less than a year old when she was adopted by Joan Crawford, the glamorous movie star. Even though Christian grew up in the midst of wealth, she was a victim of abuse, both mentally and physically, by her mother.

According to Christiana, her mother had violent mood swings and suffered from alcoholism. She hit and screamed at her children with the least provocation or no provocation at all. Through all their suffering growing up, Christina and her brother was left out of Crawford’s will. It seems that another sister and her husband, Jerome, influenced their aging mother, who was suffering from a mental condition, to exclude them from her will, in order to enhance their own fortune. Above it all, Christiana has prevailed to become a writer and actress and today is an advocate for abused children.

Actress Mackenzie Phillips is another example that wealth is not the answer to the good life. She was addicted to drugs introduced to her by her own father, with whom she was involved in an incestuous relationship.

Mackenzie Philips, is the daughter of Susan Adams, the first wife of John Philips, a member of the “Mamas & the Papas.” She was only twelve years old when she won a role in “American Graffiti” and later also received a role in the TV sitcom “One Day at a Time.” Her fame and success started at a young age but also did drug addiction and alcohol. Her first experience with drugs was with her father who helped her inject cocaine at the age of eleven.

Mackenzie lived her young life steeped in drug abuse and arrests. She revealed in an interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2009 that she and her father were involved in a 10- year consensual sex relationship. It began when she was age 18. She was passed out drunk and when she awakened, she was having sex with her father. She continued her drug addiction and consensual sex with her father for the next several years.

The number of cases where the heirs of some of the wealthiest families in America have wound up living miserable lives is far too great to mention. Some lived in squalor, others were sexually and physically abused, addicted to drugs, imprisoned, dying at a young age, suicide, and many finding no satisfaction in life at all.

Perhaps you also have experienced some very bad things in your life, and life may seem hopeless to you. I want you to know that there is hope, but that hope depends on you. Are you ready to make a life-changing, eternal decision? Are you willing to make the one greatest decision that will change your life forever?

So, what is that one life changing decision that is the greatest decision of life? It begins, as we see in 2 Corinthians 5:17, when we decide to turn to God, our creator: “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.” If you are looking for a new beginning that erases all the bad decisions you have ever made and sets you on the path to a brand-new life, it can start now.  And not that only, but God’s promise of eternal life with Him in heaven when this life is over can be yours.
