The Poison of the Mind That Brings Defeat…

Written by Jimmie Burroughs

So much pain could be avoided and so many things could be accomplished was it not for the poison of the mind that brings defeat; that tell you, you cannot do certain things; which hold you back from your potential and in general limit you.  Overcoming the Poison of the Mind That Brings Defeat is a must before you can ever move forward and accomplish those things your heart desires and at the same time be happy.

The first thing you need to understand if you are to overcome the poison of the mind that brings defeat is how you are made. You are actually made up of three separate entities:

  • Body
  • Soul
  • Spirit

The body

Your mental attitude, your happiness and contentment largely depends on the shape your body is in and how well its needs or being met daily.

The body is a very complex system that works best when it is balanced. It needs clean air to breathe, healthy food for nourishment, pure water and exercise. You might be wondering just where you can find clean air to breathe today with so much pollution. The fact of the matter is you can have a lot of control over the kind of air you breathe. The home is the most polluted place in general. This happens by the Radon gas, invisible and odorless, which comes up through the ground and seeps into homes, by the products used in the construction of the home and by the worst offender of all, cigarette smoking.

It has been published that the FDA will soon require a new list of warnings to be placed on cigarette packages of the many horrible things that are now known that cigarette smoking does to the body. I’m wondering how any intelligent person in their right mind could continue to smoke with all the known facts about how cigarettes harm the body. The only way you can survive is with a body; don’t destroy it.

While it is true that you can’t have complete control over your environment, you can do what you can. Since that is not the objective of this article, I will leave that up to you to research and discover for yourself how to make your home environmentally safe.

You do have control over what you eat. I decided a long time ago that I would put healthy foods into my body as well as using food supplements to supply what the food was short on in order to give my body a balanced amount of the vitamins, fiber and trace elements it needs to function at its best. The old cliché’ that you become what you put into your body is so true. For more information on good health: www.health-antiaging.com

About 65% of Americans today are overweight or obese, so it goes without saying that we have a huge problem with food and what kind we should be eating.

I have mentioned these things because much of our success depends on a healthy well balanced body. And truly the serpents of the mind can cause you to abuse the body by inducing stress which inspires eating junk foods or smoking poisonous cigarettes or even abusing alcohol and dangerous drugs.

Another thing that poses the greatest health problems today across the world is drinking impure water that is filled with chemicals and bacteria. It is a simple matter to have a purification system in place for your drinking water. Drinking pure water as well as supplying our body with an adequate amount of it is crucial for a balanced body.

Exercise is a bad word to many but the lack of it destroys the muscular and respiratory system. Old people are the most likely to lose muscle mass and become weak and out of breath; too weak to get up from a chair and not enough breath to walk across the room.

You don’t have to go to the gym to get good exercise. A few exercises that you can do in your home will do the trick in conjunction with a walk around the neighborhood each day. Go here for tips on exercises: www.TheExercisesForAbs.com

The Soul

It is much harder to grasp the meaning and the presence of the soul and its functions because it is in the abstract, immaterial category. It is much easier to understand the tangible, material body. The soul however is the nerve center of our existence. It is through the soul that we are conscious of the world around us and are able to relate and to communicate.

By the way the soul is also a threefold entity:

  • Mind
  • Will
  • Emotions

Understand about the mind: we are to control it and not the opposite. When we leave it up to our mind to dictate our actions, we are subject to all the serpents of the mind that limit us. Our mind cannot be trusted to guide us. If we are not careful we will be given over to those suggestions of our mind that we are unworthy, unable, don’t measure up, shouldn’t try, give it up and all of the rest of the poisonous suggestions that comes from the mind.

We need a mind shift away from thoughts that limit us and to thoughts that encourage and motivate us to action. In the spirit section below I will discuss how this is done.

The will on the other hand is to be developed. It is usually weak in its natural stage. It must be reinforced through knowledge and experience. Just a little success can reinforce the will greatly. Success gives the impression that yes I see that I can do that.

The emotions are sometimes fickle, so once again we can’t be led by our emotions alone. The problem here is the danger of using the drives that make up the emotions of the conscious soul in a destructive way. The drives come out of our emotions and they are good when used correctly; they are God given to help us through life as well as to help us to have true meaning and purpose. Here is a partial list of those drives:

  • Hunger Drive
  • Sex Drive
  • Anger Drive
  • Fear drive
  • Success Drive
  • Survival Drive

All of these drives as well as those not mentioned are for our benefit until they are abused and then they become counterproductive. It is the abuse of the hunger drive that in most cases causes obesity and overweight, which in turn brings on a mountain of other health related problems. Abuse the sex drive with sexual promiscuity or extramarital affairs and ruin your life or your marriage or even endanger your life.

There is so much more to be said about the topic of the mind, will and emotions that space will not allow in this article; a book would be appropriate but I hope this article is whetting your appetite to learn more.

The Spirit

Little do most people understand the power of the spirit. The spirit that is connected to God has near unlimited power. Check here for more information on how to have a spiritual connection to God. It is our spirit that should be given control. The spirit is the seat of our existence. The spirit works through the soul to perform its tasks. It will disallow the poisonous thoughts coming from the mind to control our actions and decisions when it is in control. The spirit is brave and determined and is our strongest source of wisdom and knowledge, other than God. It motivates us to action.

Spiritual power is enhanced through personal development which strengthens the soul. It is like that popular quote from Jim Rohm, “ We attract success by the person we become”. Personal Development  is a renewing and redirecting of the mind. It puts us in touch with our inner self. It empowers the inner spirit.

Overcoming the serpents of the mind is of the essence if one is to be all they can become. Serpents of the mind are deterrents that holds one back and keeps them from excelling and succeeding in life. I invite you to my website on “Christian Personal Development” to learn more about the power of personal development and how it can transform your way of thinking about all three of the categories mentioned in this article.

Conclusion

OK in conclusion: Here is the bottom line to all I’ve been saying above: Most of us if not all of us need a new self. I mean a complete overhaul of all three of the categories I’ve mentioned above. Now I realize that that might not set well with everyone, but it is true.  I mean getting in touch with your real self; the inner self and coming to grips with those things that are holding you back is essential for real fulfillment.

I think it was Zigg Ziggler who called bad thinking “stinken thinken”. For most people there is a need for even the recognition of what is wrong, whether it is bad negative thoughts about themselves, or limiting beliefs, or just not understanding the human make up and what is necessary to overcome and to become.

Most are just looking for one thing and that is success which means more money and nicer things around them. What they don’t realize is that success by itself will never bring the fullness they thought it would bring. Success by itself can be just another experience in emptiness.

I hope you understand this today, that success is only one part of the whole. John D Rockefeller Sr. was one of the wealthiest and most successful men in the world but his health was failing and he lived basically on goat’s milk. He was literally unhappy and dying. One day he was talking to a next door neighbor and in the discussion his neighbor shared something that Mr. Rockefeller had never considered before and that was the real purpose of life which is helping others.

From that day Mr. Rockefeller’s attention turned away from his own wants and needs and he began to search for ways to help and serve others and his whole life took a change including his health. He did not soon die as was expected but regained his health and went on to live to the ripe old age of 98. The projects and things he initiated have helped millions.

Rockefeller, at the age of 86, penned the following words to sum up his life:

“I was early taught to work as well as play,
My life has been one long, happy holiday;
Full of work and full of play-
I dropped the worry on the way-
And God was good to me everyday.”

You’re created for something great and life is just a matter of finding your purpose and fulfilling that purpose. The process alone often brings great wealth and success but those are only parts of the whole. It is the whole fullness of life that brings the entire fulfillment that we dream of.

One of the greatest needs in life is knowledge, whether it is on how to become a better self or how to excel in our business or anything else; it could be in how to maintain a good marriage or how to raise children who are responsible, but primarily how to find and fulfill our purpose for living. Because of the lack of obtainable knowledge many, many are living far below their means; they either do not know what is wrong or if they do, they don’t know how to fix it.

Speaking of success, someone asked Mike Dillard how he built his business to 8 figures and if he had to do it over how would he go about it? His answer was, “I mastered copywriting and pay per click advertising and that is how I would do it again if necessary”. Jonathan Budd, 8 figure earner, said a similar thing. I heard Mark Havorson, also an 8 figure earner, says much the same. Success is all about gaining of knowledge, knowledge gained from others experiences that are proven to work.

If I’m correct in what I glean from those successful men mentioned above, it is not just the success they have experienced in the terms of money but it is the overall purpose of life that has brought fulfillment.

Now here is the point and I believe it is a life changing principle: Does it make any sense to struggle through life groping for answers and experiencing unnecessary pain, whether it is a matter of becoming a better self or excelling in your business etc. or should we be quick to learn from those who already have paid the price and are where we want to be?

I think the answer is obvious. I presently have 7 online courses I have bought because they all are knowledge that I need to take my business to the next level. True, it is going to take a while to work through them; I’m not going to be eating potatoes chips and watching TV.

But I tell you what I will be doing. I will be investing in my mind which is the best investment I could make, that pays higher dividends than the stock market or anything else.

You know what? It is the work I’m doing on myself in becoming a healthier more knowledgeable and a better person concerning the  three categories mentioned above: the body, Soul and the spirit that pays off more than anything else I do.

Emotional highs, material success and even a healthy body alone are not adequate by themselves; it takes a balance of all three, body, soul and spirit to give the fullness of life that gives that special meaning and purpose to life that can be found nowhere else.

Here’s the deal: All you need is already inside of you waiting to be revealed and developed. If you don’t know that already, you need to learn it. You’re created for something great but it is for sure no one else is going to tap you on the shoulder and take you by the hand and lead you to the promise land. You are going to have to take charge and become the leader that you have the potential to become. Personal development is a good starting place.
