Christian personal development is all about improving the quality of life. Did I Live? is the final question to a successful life. In this article we will be discussing how to live a life of purpose.

Take responsibility for your own life

One of the primary principles in learning how to live is learning to take responsibility for your own life. Negative emotions rob us of all enjoyment. Yes it is easy to blame others for everything but that does not enhance our lives one bit, it only pulls us down. Try it for yourself by proclaiming, “I am responsible for my life!” Say it over and over and every time you feel like blaming someone else.

Avoid negative thinking

Someone said that negative thinking is “stinking thinking” it smells up our whole life. It is a fact that we can only think one thought at a time and it is our choice to whether it is negative or positive. Become a positive thinker and yes I know it will take time to overcome years of negative thinking. Start by quitting blaming others and start taking responsibility for your own life and then stop complaining, criticizing and condemning. How much do you enjoy being around a person who is constantly blaming others, criticizing, condemning and complaining? You don’t, so why would you expect others to like that in you.

You will be surprised to what just this attitude change will do for your life and relationships. Our attitude reflects how we view life; it determines our perspective and the actual quality of our life. It is true that success and money can enable us to have some of the nicer things of life but they can never add that certain quality that only a positive attitude can.

Learn to enjoy life

I have some rich friends as well as some who don’t have much in terms of material things but I must say that the quality of life of those with less often far exceeds those who are wealthy. Why? Because they have learned to enjoy their life; they are willing to contribute to helping others; they enjoy family and friends. They have learned that the best things in life are actually free and that is the relationships we develop and enjoy as well as the contributions made in concern for others.

Plan to make a contribution

There is a verse of scripture which says, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” The word blessed here can be translated “happy”. A self-centered life directed to one’s own needs and pleasure is a poor way to go through life but the life that is lived to make a contribution to the welfare of others is a life well lived and one that brings gratification  and purpose.

I have known those who have this great quality of caring for the needs of others and would give their last dime to someone else. It is not how much we have to give but the loving attitude of the heart to give that which we have. There was a poor widow woman in the Bible who gave her last penny and Jesus said of her that her gift was far greater than those who gave much because she gave from a heart of love and because she was willing to sacrifice of her own needs to help others.

What a difference just one act of kindness makes in a world so full of selfishness. One of the greatest attributes of Christian personal development is an attitude of concern for the welfare of others and a driving desire to help them. Napoleon Hill in his book, “Think and grow rich” said that we can grow rich ourselves by helping others to grow rich and how true it is whether in money or in a rich life experience.

Just take time to try it out in little things like a nice smile, kind words, a hug and I love you to love ones. Do this often enough and it will become a part of your personality. People will like you and want to be around you. You will develop deeper relationships and enjoy them more. You will spend less time thinking about your own problems and therefore experience more contentment.

It is up to you and you alone to make the necessary effort to change. If having a “Life of purpose” is important to you then some changes are in order. I hope you agree and start today; it will be worth every bit of effort you put into it. And “Did I live?” is no longer the question but yes I did live life is a matter of fact.
