Life is more fun when you know how to live…

“The world is full of people who want to live forever but don’t know how to spend a rainy Sunday afternoon.”  David Blair

I came across the above quote on Twitter and thought how true it is. Knowing how to make the best of life is a secret many are yet to discover. It is my personal belief that Personal Development is an important key.

The reason I say that is because in Personal Development, for one thing, we learn what love is and how to develop it in our life. Love is indeed the greatest thing in the world and experiencing it is the greatest experience. Spending a rainy Sunday afternoon cuddled up with someone you love would make a wonderful day. If there is no one handy then a good book would be another alternative. If it is warm enough, a Sunday afternoon walk in the rain without an umbrella or raincoat would add some spice. If it is a cold day, just to sit in front of a cozy fire could be sooo relaxing.

For a contented person there are always exciting things to do; a relaxing nap or an extended call to someone you love etc. The thought here is being contented in whatever the circumstances may happen to be is a dimension of life that adds purpose to everything.

I said that Personal Development was a key; becoming a better person opens up opportunities that would not ordinarily be an option. It creates new relationships and builds existing ones. For too many life is all a hustle and bustle without time to “smell the Roses” to use an old cliche.

Personal Development is about learning what is meaningful and prioritizing those things. For example, spending quality time with family and friends, pursuing a hobby that gives you pleasure, helping others and the list can go on and on, if you take time to compile one. Americans spend far too many hours each day in the passive mode of watching Television, and as they watch others living life on the screen while theirs is slipping away.

Another big mistake about life is believing that material things are what give life its meaning. A pastor friend recently visited  a third world country in Africa out in the bush where people live off the land and have very little; they live in little huts with dirt floors and at night they slept on a mat woven of straw. They have nothing similar to what Westerners take for granted, and yet the pastor told his large church that they were the happiest people he had ever seen. I don’t know how that congregation of affluent people took it. They were Doctors and lawyers and many of them were well off financially. I know that it resonated with me but then I know the pleasures of a simple life. I prefer it over the lavish, extravagant and I might add pressured.

One of my favorite preachers is Dr Billy Graham who I believe has it all together when it comes to life. I have always been impressed by the simple lifestyle he preferred, living in the mountains of North Carolina where he and his wife raised their family. Someone once accused Billy of wearing 4 or 5 hundred dollar suits and he laughed and said no, that they were just cheap readymade suits.

A number of the super rich have discovered that the simple life is the most rewarding. Warren Buffet still lives in his home that he bought in 1951 for $50,000, has no yacht of private jet, and it is reported that he even flies coach when he travels. I’m not downplaying the importance of having money…I prefer having it to not having it, but what I mean is that money brings neither contentment or happiness in its self.

The more we learn about ourselves through the process of personal development, the more we can relax and enjoy the more simple pleasures of life, and the more we perfect the virtue of contentment, the more we are able to Make any rainy day meaningful.

    Today, I went to the beachfront with my kids. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She put the shell to her ear and screamed.     One thing I have actually noticed is the fact there are plenty of fallacies regarding the financial institutions intentions if talking about foreclosures. One fable in particular is the fact the bank would like your house. The bank wants your money, not your own home. They want the bucks they lent you having interest. Preventing the bank will still only draw a foreclosed final result. Thanks for your posting.
