The Decisions We Make Determine Our Future…

The decisions we make determine our future, well being, happiness and all other details of our life; so knowing how to determine best decisions and how to structure decision making is ever so important. Discernment and intuition work together in the inner, higher self to enable us to make the best decisions. Learning how to get in touch with the inter, higher self is the object of this paper.

Many go through life judging things by their appearance. Their life is lived from the outside out. There is a better way of living when you discover the inner self. Some refer to this inner self as intuition or the still small voice from within. Some describe it as intuitive awareness or discernment or even perception. Whatever you may want to call it; it is actually the inner, higher, spiritual form of self.

The human being, unlike the animal kingdom, is more than body and brain; we are a complex entity of three distinctive parts: body, soul and spirit. What comes from our spiritual makeup is the source of all three terms mentioned above: perception, intuition and discernment. Although the three have some in common they all serve in a different way.

Perception is guided by discernment as well as intuition. Let us begin with a clear definition of these three terms:

Perception: The act or faculty of apprehending by means of the senses or of the mind; cognition; understanding; immediate or intuitive recognition or appreciation…

Intuition: The ability to understand something immediately, without the need for conscious reasoning.

Discernment: The ability to judge well; perception of that which is obscure

What we must determine:

  • How can I know my true authentic self?
  • How can I be completely intuitively aware?
  • Is there a way to depend on inner guidance?

First, how can we get in touch with our true authentic self?

From a Christian perspective, there must be a rebirth of the spirit, which is the inner self, or a quickening of the inner self. From a secular point of view it is an entirely different thing; while there can be some effectiveness from the secular approach, it is far less in scope. What I mean is that you can pump up the inner self and build it up but it falls way short of the new birth. If what you desire is to be fully in touch with your inner self, nothing short of the new birth will suffice.

So what is meant by the new birth? When sin entered the human race, in the Garden of Eden, it had a devastating effect on the spirit of man. The spirit of man was separated from the Spirit of God and this is described in the Bible as spiritual death. While the spirit of man is still within him, it no longer has direct contact with God.

The new birth then is when God enters back into man. The Bible is more oriented toward getting God back into man than it is in getting man into heaven but both are accomplished with the new birth. How then is the new birth brought about?

This term, born again, first appears in the Bible in John chapter three…

“There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again” (John 3:1-7).

When we believe on Jesus, trusting in Him and Him alone to forgive all our sins—then God the Father in the form of God the Holy Spirit enters our spirit (John 14:23). The “Holy Spirit” is “God within us.” This new found presence of God quickens our spirit, giving us a direct connection to our creator, God.

The Spirit of Christ indwells every believer, Romans 8:9. The Godhead, God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit indwells each believer. God who once dwelled in temples made by hands now resides in what the Bible calls the temple within us, within our spirit: “What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost [which is] in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?” (I Corinthians 6:19 King James Bible)

Secondly: How can I be completely intuitively aware?

Now assuming we have received God into our spirit, how can we be completely intuitively aware? Understand that just as we were born into this world not fully mature, likewise neither are we born spiritually mature. We do now have the presence of God within to enable us to become fully mature and all that we can become. The Bible refers to the developing of our inner, spiritual, higher self as the process of sanctification which is a subject for another time but in essence what it means is that we can now be in touch with our inter spirit and can build and strengthen our spiritual self.

What this all means is that now not only can we build or spiritual self under God’s direction but also build our intuition and discernment. While all believers can have discernment not all have the spiritual gift of discernment which is a special gift from God. All believers have at least one spiritual gift but they all differ. Read I Corinthians 12 for further reference.

Remember also that our spiritual growth depends on the knowledge we acquire from the Bible and through our communication with God through prayer. Many believers are yet to understand the importance of a working knowledge of the Bible as well as a constant communication with God through prayer. I have realized this for a long time and have studied the Bible for years but it has only been in recent years that I decided to read fully through the Bible every year for the rest of my life. The Bible is a book of wisdom that enables us to be completely intuitively aware among other things.

Thirdly: Is there a way to depend on inner guidance?

Is there a way to depend on inner guidance? The answer is yes; what a difference it makes to live from the inside out rather than from the outside out. Because of our growing power of intuition and discernment, we can now perceive things not based on what they appear to be but on what they actually are. The reason being that we do have an inter guidance which is the indwelling Holy Spirit to nudge us and lead us along. The Holy Spirit of God is our guide and our comforter, He empowers us to make right decisions, He is our teacher, He is our encourager, He is our strength, He loves us unconditionally, He also convicts, rebukes, chastises, and too much more to mention here.

Conclusion:

It is true that the decisions we make determine our future…but with God in the center of our life to lead and direct, making right decisions become routine. It is only when we decide to go it alone that we run into big trouble. He is God within us to guide and direct our lives if we will allow him but He never forces decisions on us or makes us follow he leadership; that we decide.
