Most every year storms hit some coastal area of the United States and advance warnings are given to people in the path of the storm to evacuate; most do, but there are always some who refuse to heed the warnings and some die. It is always sad when people lose their lives, but when it’s pointless it makes no sense at all. It happened this week: Nearly 50 million people were threatened by Sandy, a Category 1 hurricane; it made landfall around 8 p.m. Monday in New Jersey. A record storm surge of nearly 14 feet hit New York City, and rescue efforts are now under way for those who ignored evacuation orders. So far over 90 lives are already lost and there will surely be more discovered. Why do people ignore extremely, serious life threatening warnings? (Picture by Chicago Tribune)

Several years ago, I read about a gentleman who was returning home to New Orleans late at night across the Lake Pontchartrain Bridge. Ahead of him he saw the tail lights of a car suddenly disappear; he threw on his brakes…good thing because a barge had struck the bridge and knocked a section out. Several cars had already plunged over into the frigid water below. The gentleman did what any of us would have done; he frantically began to try and warn oncoming motorist. Several would not stop but instead went over the edge. Finally someone did stop, and the traffic was halted.

Not heading warnings is an age old thing. In the Bible Jesus on one occasion raised a man from the dead. His name was Lazarus, and he had been dead for 4 days. There was a crowd at Lazarus’ tomb when Jesus performed this miracle. Some of the crowd believed on Jesus because of the miracle but others went away and did not believe even after witnessing something as powerful as raising a person from the dead.

There is a story, in the Bible, of a rich man who died and went to hell recorded in Luke16:14-31. It doesn’t meet the criteria for a parable so apparently it actually happened. In hell, the rich man lifted up his eyes and saw Father Abraham and Lazarus in paradise. He pleaded with Abraham to send Lazarus to his living brothers and warn them of the awful place. Abraham replied that they had Moses and the prophets, and if they wouldn’t believe them, they wouldn’t believe someone even if they returned from the dead.

The Bible tells us that only a few will heed the warnings of the Bible concerning hell. It says that the path that leads to destruction is broad and easily accessible, and the way that leads to life is narrow and few will find it.

What about you? If you were to die today, where would you spend eternity? The Bible says it would be either heaven or hell. With God as my witness, I pray that you will listen to the warning I’m giving you today. In my lifetime I’ve carried this warning to many and some have listened and believed but many haven’t. Will you listen? There is a heaven and  hell and everyone will spend eternity in one place or the other. It is God’s desire that no one perishes, but he leaves that decision up to each person.

Jesus said, “Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know. Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me (John 14:1-6).

Conclusion

I have prepared a step by step plan for you to follow based on what the Bible tells us we must do in order to be assured that we go to heaven when we die. This is the most serious warning you will ever hear in your life, and only you can decide whether to ignore it or heed it: How to go to heaven.
