King Solomon’s 9 Rules to Grow Wealth

By some estimates, King Solomon had assets worth 2 trillion dollars; according to that, he was the wealthiest man who ever lived. When Solomon became king of Israel, after David, his father, died, he prayed to God and asked for wisdom to lead the Children of Israel. That impressed God that Solomon did not ask for riches, and God gave him wisdom and promised him great wealth.

People and rulers worldwide came to Solomon to hear his wisdom, and they were astonished at his fantastic understanding and knowledge. Today, Solomon is considered the wisest man who ever lived. Solomon was also a prolific writer, and today, we have access to Solomon’s writings from the biblical books of Proverbs, Psalms, and Ecclesiastes.

We May Wonder Why King Solomon Was So Successful.

That is what I would like to share with you today. I decided to use only the book of Proverbs, although there is much more information about Soloman in Psalms and Ecclesiastes. This is free information on principles you can apply to your life. By understanding Solomon’s principles and how he applies them to managing money and growing wealth, you can do the same and enjoy financial freedom in your life. Let’s look at the nine rules for growing wealth:

Do Not trust Money but trust in God,

Proverbs 10:22– “The blessing of the Lord makes one rich, and he adds no sorrow with it.

Think of the people you have known who had a lot of money but were unhappy. King Solomon speaks of the sorrow that comes to those whose only objective is seeking money before seeking God. Only when we seek God first can we expect His blessings and a successful life, including financial blessings. We must always be careful to put God first, and His blessing will come.

Giving away a portion of what we earn Increases Wealth

Proverbs 11:24-25 – “One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want.  Whoever brings blessing will be enriched, and one who waters will himself be watered.”

The usual way of thinking is giving away money decreases wealth. To some, that would be financial mismanagement. Nevertheless, the Bible teaches the opposite, that giving increases in more ways than increasing wealth. For example, the Bible says, “I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35).

The word “blessed” can be translated as happy. Throughout the Bible, God promises believers His blessing upon them when they give their increase to others in need, including happiness, wealth, and peace. Even unbelievers have discovered that giving is a principle for increasing wealth.

Work as if unto the Lord

Proverbs 16:3– “Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.”

God created Adam and Eve and placed them in the Garden to work and keep it. Man, therefore, was created. Solomon’s rule above is committing our work to the Lord for our plans of success to succeed. This, of course, is directed to the believer in Christ. The believer’s purpose in life is to glorify God in all that they do, which always brings rewards, rewards of which are those that are eternal.

Diligence in Growing Wealth.

Proverbs 10:4“A slack hand causes poverty, but the hand of the diligent makes rich.”

Diligence in the Bible equates to a verse found in Matthew 6:33, “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things will be added unto you.” A diligent person realizes that a relationship with God first, instills believers with wisdom to gain their needs. On the other hand, the absence of diligence means the lack of wisdom and righteousness required for true success. If we are willing to work hard with God-given diligence, God will bless us with our needs and even above those needs. Success is more than money; it includes purpose and meaning and how much we contribute to the lives of others, as well as enjoying our stay on earth.

Laziness Breeds Poverty and Hunger

Proverbs 19:15 “Slothfulness casts into a deep sleep, and an idle person will suffer hunger.”

I have known those who always seem to be trying to get out of work, even to the point of relying on charity or help from others when they don’t need to and are fully able to work. They use excuses and are never willing to take responsibility for their lives. These kinds of people are never successful. Some have won the lottery only to wind up broke and in debt in a short period of time. This attitude leads to spiritual, financial, and emotional poverty. Be an achiever, avoid laziness, and you will succeed and avoid poverty.

Avoid Debt, Especially Credit Cards.

Proverbs 22:7– “The rich rules over the poor, and the borrower is slave to the lender”

According to statistics, “two-thirds of all people and one-third of high-income people live from paycheck to paycheck because of indebtedness.” Some credit charge as much as 29%, making it nearly impossible to get out of debt. Having no debt frees people to do some of the things they want to do.

There are courses on how to get out of debt at a relatively low price, but you can also plan ways yourself. For example, if you have a high-interest credit card, transfer your debt to a no-interest card for up to two years interest-free; there is a fee from 2% to 4%, depending on the card you choose. If you can increase your payments, you can pay off your card in a much shorter time with no added interest. For example, if you owe $10,000 at a high interest rate, a $200 monthly payment is reduced to nearly nothing because $155 of your payment goes for interest on the loan. Set some goals:

  • Have a written plan for getting out of debt.
  • Take control of your money through a written budget and spending plan.
  • Communicate and Plan with your spouse on how you will eliminate wasteful spending.

If you are serious about freeing yourself from debt, you must commit yourself to proven ways to get out of debt. This is the only way you will ever enjoy financial freedom in your life.

Seek Wise Counsel and instruction.

Proverbs 3:18Poverty and disgrace come to him who ignores instruction, but whoever heeds reproof is honored.”

Wise counsel is available in more ways than personal counseling. Many books have been written to help you manage finances and grow wealth. There is a section in my new book “A New Self in 90 Days” on finances and growing wealth; check it out.

The Wisdom of Solomon tells us that we need the instruction of others if we expect to be successful. Here is a tip: Don’t trust just anyone for advice; do some diligent research. Not all advice is good advice. It is unwise to depend on advice from a relative or friend who is barely getting by and earning minimum wage. Go to someone with a proven track record of success.

Profitable Work is Necessary for Financial Gain

Proverbs 14:23– “In all toil there is profit, but mere talk tends only to poverty.”

Hard work enables you to earn money and builds character and a solid reputation. It is good to make plans, but if your plans do not include a way to reach them, they are made in vain. One principle that works in marriage and the workplace is, “Be a doer, not a taker.”

Gain Wealth Gradually

Proverbs 13:11– Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it.”

One common thing among lottery winners is they waste their money and end up broke and in debt. Quick-get-rich schemes like the lottery and other unproven investments that promise huge returns usually fail. Buying lottery tickets when the chance of winning is one out of millions is an outrageous waste of money.

Solid and lasting wealth is earned slowly over a lifetime. It requires both diligence and patience but brings financial freedom.
