Lovejoy’s plunge into the 2 million degrees Fahrenheit of the sun’s atmosphere proved not to be fatal as it was believed it would be by scientist around the world. Scientist are amazed at how much attention this comet has gotten. It is believed it is because of its name, Lovejoy. Well that is understandable since the two words focus on the most sought after things in our world, love and joy. I guess we could say that Lovejoy proved how enduring they are. Sadly however both of these are often missing from the lives of many. So how do we have love and joy which makes enduring in the atmosphere in which we live an exciting adventure instead of a fatal plunge?

Love and joy are closely connected, close enough in fact to be identified as one as they are in Lovejoy’s name. Joy is naturally a result of true love. Galatians 5:22 describes love and joy along with 7 other attributes as being one; it is called the fruit of the spirit. The entire list is love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, gentleness, faith meekness and temperance, all of which make up the fruit of the Holy Spirit. So what exactly is the fruit of the Spirit?

In Galatians 5:16 the Apostle Paul said that believers are to walk in the Spirit. What this means is to be submissive to the will of the Holy Spirit, allowing him to be in full control or our lives. When he is in control, then it is known by the fruit of his Spirit that is seen in our life which is identified by Love. The love mentioned in Galatians chapter 5 is the “agape” love of God. It is a supernatural love; the highest kind of love.

So actually the Spirit’s present in one’s life is the glory of God manifested and characterized by the nine components that make up the fruit of the Spirit. It is interesting that the first mentioned is “love” and then joy and peace and so on. Actually the fruit of the spirit is love. God is defined in the Bible as love and therefore His indwelling Spirit is defined by the following components:  love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, gentleness, faith, meekness, and temperance.

Understand that there are a couple other types of love also, phileo and eros. Philleo is the human form of love and is also mentioned in the Bible. Eros which is not mentioned in the Bible is the Greek word for exotic, sexual love. Phileo  is the Greek root word for philanthropist which is the name given to a person who has an intense love for other human beings and in some instances are willing to die for others. Phileo certainly is a strong form of love and anyone can experience it in their life if willing. However the highest form of love only comes with a relationship with God and is evidenced by the presence of his indwelling Holy Spirit in the lives of believers.
