Can You Trust Anyone Anymore…?

Written by Jimmie Burroughs

Can you trust the police officer a few doors down? Not always; A story surfaced this week of the arrest of a former police officer who abducted a 6 year old girl in Illinois in 1956, daughter of a nearby neighbor,  klled her, after who knows what he did, and dumped her body in a wooded area where it was not discovered for a couple of years. A discrepancy in his alibi was just uncovered recently and he is now to stand trial.

Can you trust your own pastor? Once again the answer is, no not every pastor. My own pastor tried to hit on my wife. He and his wife later divorced and he died at a young age. The things pastors have done in recent years that were terrible wrongs would fill a book.

Can you trust the teacher that teaches your children in the public school or the private school? Once again the answer is, no not every teacher. You don’t have to leave your own area in most cases to find on record teachers who have molested their students.

Can parents be trusted with their own children? Not in all cases can parents be trusted. Parents have molested their own children; sold them into prostitution and even murdered them.

Can you trust a best friend? Too often have I known of someone’s best friend stealing their friend’s wife or husband?

Can you trust the president of the United States? Not all presidents are men of character. We have had recent examples of that.

So the big sixty four thousand dollar question is: Who in the world can be trusted anyway? The answer is you can actually trust every category mentioned above most of the time. Only a few show themselves to be otherwise untrustworthy. As far as being 100% sure, afraid that is impossible. People are not always what they appear to be and there is no hard fast rule that can determine without doubt who can be trusted and who can’t.

Another question is how far can we even trust ourselves to always do the right thing? Joseph of the Bible didn’t trust himself with Potiphar’s beautiful wife so he ran when he found himself in a compromising situation. The answer is: we can’t always know exactly how we will respond to a situation and therefore we must plan to try to keep ourselves from those situations. Make decisions in advance as to how you will respond and stick with them.

A young girl can’t afford to wait until she is in the back seat of a parked car to decide whether she will have sex. That decision must be made in advance and stood by in all circumstances. Because we often make bad decisions and do the wrong thing, we must always be on guard. Husbands cheat on their wives and wives cheat on their husbands; why? There are many reasons but a primary one is that they don’t guard against it in the first place. Employees cheat on their employers and employers cheat their employees because there is a character flaw that is not dealt with.

With all that in mind what is a person to do? We live in a very imperfect world and unfair world where the innocent often suffer for the uncaring spirit of others, even by their own close relatives or friends. The only thing we personally can do is become a trusting person who does care about others and who does guard against ever doing things to hurt others.

Looking back I can only recall a few of all the people I’ve known that I would trust unconditionally. One was my wife of 44 years; another was a former pastor, my mother, my grandmother and a few others. As I think about it; it makes me sad that, that is the way it is. I really do want to trust everyone but I know that cannot be. Once again, all I can really do is to become a person that others can trust unconditionally. Can You Trust Anyone Anymore…? If more people had the attitude above, then we all would have more people that we could trust; that is more than we can count on one hand.

I have great confidence in the progress you are going to make.
