If Tomorrow Never Comes, will I have done my very best…?

Written by Jimmie Burroughs – Email this article to a friend

I ran across an old Garth Brooks’ love song, “If tomorrow never comes,” and it inspired me to write a very personal article about myself and my late wife Bunny. It was a question from the lyrics that got my attention: “Did I try in every way to show her every day that she’s my only one.”

The sad truth is that tomorrow will never come for my true love and me. Nearly seven long years have come and gone since Bunny, the love of my life, passed away. The memory causes tears to stream down my face as I write this, and I can barely see to type the words. I wonder, now that my time on earth with her is through, what might have been if I had told her all those many times that I could have but didn’t how much I loved her. I do live with regret, because I don’t think she ever knew my true feelings for her. Yes, we had a good life together, but there could have been so much more.

In our rush through life, we often overlook or neglect those things, which matter the most, like love and expressing it often to those for whom we truly care. Rita Collage said, “Love is the only thing we bring into this world, the only thing we take with us and the only thing we leave behind.”

I know now that love is the most precious thing in the world, but I also know, by experience, how easy it is to overlook and how often it can be neglected. The Bible places great emphasis on love and even describes God as love. Jesus said in, Matthew 22:37-40, that love is the greatest commandment: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment.  And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”  The Bible also says, “Husbands love your wives even as Christ loved the church and gave himself for it,” (Ephesians 5:25)

I’m just wondering today if I had done my very best, what a difference it would have made for Bunny. Yes, I know there’s no use thinking about “what could have been.” There’s no changing what was, but we can change what is. It is like the lyrics of this great love song, “I made a promise to myself, to say each day how much she means to me.” The thought of it today makes me want to do my very best. Sadly, it’s too late for the one person I loved more than anything in the world. Anyway, now I’ve made a commitment with myself to express my love to others before it’s too late and “if tomorrow never comes.”

What about you? Do you still have that second chance to tell her how you feel?  “Tell that someone you love what you’re thinking of if Tomorrow Never Comes!”

“So tell that one you love

                                                             what you’re thinking of

if tomorrow never comes.”
