What’s the Greatest Moment of Your Life?

Alec Baldwin was on the Seinfeld show (I didn’t see it; read it on Yahoo news), and he asked Seinfeld a question: “Baldwin starts out asking Seinfeld what’s the worst thing he’s ever done that he doesn’t regret. Seinfeld doesn’t have an answer (“I’m still waiting for that one”), but Baldwin does: He elaborately describes a scene where he was driving in Manhattan, and a cab full of young dudes pulled up alongside, with one asking him, “The f— you looking at?” Big mistake, buddy: Baldwin says that he then took the 32-ounce iced coffee he was drinking and hurled it into the cab, soaking the hecklers and drove off feeling victorious.
The funniest thing about the whole clip is that Baldwin twice describes this incident as “the greatest moment of my life.” Really, this is a man who’s won Emmys, starred in huge Hollywood blockbusters, had kids, met Presidents; throwing coffee on some random punks tops all of that?”
Surly he didn’t really mean it, or on the second thought maybe being a movie star really is a boring waste of time . . . you know, playing make believe all the time. I had a small speaking part in a movie once. I must say it was rather boring sitting around waiting for the crew to set up for different scenes. Also, having to say the same things over and over for several takes is monotonous; not glamorous at all as it might appear.
America,today,is star struck with movie stars, entertainers and athletes. The truth is they are just humans like the rest of us with the same kinds of problems, but usually with more. And some, I might add, are not very good examples of what humans should be. The people who really make the serious contributions to society are often ignored.
The fact is we could do without celebrities and probably do a lot better, but you know what? We couldn’t do without sanitation workers. Think about how it would be if there weren’t any sanitation workers for a few months. Garbage would be piled head high along the street in posh neighborhoods. The smell would be atrocious. Give me a choice either the overpaid celebs or the sanitation workers, and there is no contest; give me the sanitation workers every time and let the celebs go away.
I’m not against anyone, but celebrities do kind of make me sick to my stomach sometimes, at least some of them. The truth is I’ve been around celebrities, and have been the least impressed for the most part, and never yet have bothered them for an autograph. You know, I never thought about it before, but maybe I should ask the sanitation workers who pick up garbage along my street for their autograph. At least they do something significant. They pick the garbage up and dispose of it instead of sending it out over the airwaves into our homes.
Whatever it is that you do for a living if honest, is more important than the people who play games, and do make believe, and receive unbelievable sums of money for it. If you are thinking, well I bet he spends enough money at the movies and enough time watching TV. You’re wrong! I quit both years ago and have never looked back. I try to spend my time living life rather than passively watching others play make believe in a crude and unacceptable fashion.
However, there was a time when I could go see a good movie and leave feeling good, like it had made my life a little better. That was in a different era before moviemakers believed that the more times they can include the “F” word, and profanity, and sexually explicit scenes, and blow up more things the better and more entertaining the movie. I also enjoyed TV before it became pure garbage, totally unfit for human consumption.
Please understand that I’m not being critical of anyone who enjoys TV or movies; that’s your business. I’m just speaking my own thoughts, and saying what works best in my life. I understand that TV can be entertaining and that there are still some good programs if you are selective, and also form time to time a good movie comes along to the theater.
I don’t mean to come across as a prude either. I’m just being honest about some things that are easily ignored in our society today, and I think most of you will agree if you just stop and think about it. We in America have put aside our values and have allowed the grossest of things to take their place, and consequently we see our society falling apart. The new age, new morals, etc that is often deemed as progress isn’t progress at all; it is a step backward.
Finally, I hope if we are ever asked the question “what’s the greatest moment of your life?”, the answer won’t be something as weird and trivial as what Mr. Baldwin said. It’s not hard for me to remember the greatest moment of my life. It was the day I asked Jesus Christ into my life.
