Meditation and Personal Development

If we are going to succeed in the process of personal development, then we must set our minds (or meditate) on “spiritual, higher things”, only then can we with God’s help put off the old person we are and put on the new person we want to become. What we see, hear and look upon will determine the person we become.

A Stanford University research team conducted studies recently that have revealed “what we watch” does have an effect on our imaginations, our learning patterns, and our behaviors:

“First, we are exposed to new behaviors and characters. Next, we learn or acquire this new behavior. The last and most crucial step is that we adopt these behaviors as our own. One of the most critical aspects of human [personal] development that we need to understand is the influence of ‘repeated viewing’ and ‘repeated verbalizing’ in shaping our future. The information goes in, harmlessly, almost unnoticed, on a daily basis, but we don’t react to it until later, when we aren’t able to realize the basis for our reactions. In other words, our value system is being formed without any conscious awareness on our part of what is happening!” (Seeds of Greatness, Denis Waitley, p. 47-48)

Wow! We are being transformed one way or the other either into something we don’t want to become or what we intentionally intend to become. What a great advantage to plan and direct what we become. That is what Christian development is all about. Christian meditation has a great part in it.

Christian Meditation

Christian meditation is not the same as that of eastern religions, like Hinduism, Buddhism, or Transcendental Meditation or the New Age where the objective is to experience those things which are inexpressible otherwise such as truth, peace, being or revelation. This is a subjective form of meditation. This type of meditation usually is an attempt to empty the mind in order to receive or find truth.

Christian meditation is the opposite. Instead of emptying the mind, it is filling the mind with objective thoughts. It centers on truth already revealed; truth that builds the person and lifts him up.

Meditate on These Things

8 Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things. Philippians 4:8 (New King James Version)

The Apostle Paul doesn’t list everything here, in fact he adds, “whatever things are of good report”; this could include a good movie, a book or article, a conversation with a wise person etc.

The purpose of Christian meditation in connection with personal development is to nourish the mind with understanding of higher things and to give spiritual joy and strength.

It is clear that we need to meditate because it is the source of joy and strength as well as the focus of the transformation taking place within us. If it is our goal to become a new person, according to Romans 12:2, this requires a “renewing of the mind”. What this means is that we set out minds on the type of things we want to become.

How then are we to meditate?

As we read in the Stanford report above, we are being transformed into something even in our casual everyday existence by the things we see, hear and think. Therefore it is extremely important as to what we read what we watch, hear and think if we are concerned about what we become.

Christian personal development is a matter of replacing the ordinary, casual thoughts and actions with positive, constructive and determined spiritual thoughts. I said determined; it is a personal choice as to the direction our lives will take. We have the alternative to choose, but choice is not all; it is what we choose. The fact that you are taking time to read this now shows that you are interested in making right choices that will determine you future.

Meditation doesn’t have to center on any one topic all the time but instead needs to be variable. It takes a wide range of knowledge to become the best you can be. Don’t waste your time on useless things but focus on things of virtue and value. I haven’t watched TV now for over two years, not to say that there aren’t things of value on TV because there are, but I wasted a lot of time watching things that had no value. So I decided to turn my attention elsewhere and it has been so refreshing to no longer be a slave to passive meaningless TV programs. My advice to anyone interested in personal development is to read, read and read some more and then write to express what you have learned.

An excellent place to start is with the Bible, the book on life and wisdom. It has been a textbook for some of the greatest people ever to walk on this planet. Here is a wise quote: “Hold the word of God in your heart until it has affected every phase of your life…this is meditation.”

As you read, be sure to apply what you are reading; ask yourself questions as you go:

  • What is the truth that I need to glean from this verse?
  • What is this verse addressing in my life?
  • Is there something that I need to change?
  • Is there a new habit that I need to form?
  • Is there an old habit that I need to break?
  • Is there something I need to repent of and turn away from?

Making a time and place for meditation

Meditation can take place at most anytime and anywhere, but it is of great value to have a set time and place to meditate consistently. I like to meditate the first thing in the morning and the last thing in the evening. I like to follow it with bible reading and prayer. These three things will help you more than anything else in your journey towards personal development. Find a private, quiet place in your home of a quiet place outside and let it become your place to go and meditate.

Conclusion

There is a real difference in Christian meditation and what is commonly referred to as meditation by most religions and individuals. Christian meditation emphasis known truth whereas other forms of meditation emphasis the emptying of the mind in order to receive some desired truth.
