The Attitude of Thanksgiving is for the Year Around…

Although Thanksgiving is only once a year as a national holiday, the Attitude of Thanksgiving is for the Year Around…the spirit of Thanksgiving should always be in our heart. Those two words “Thank You” are so precious yet not spoken nearly enough. Most of us have so much to be thankful for. Think of five things each morning to be thankful for and see if it will make for a more positive and meaningful day.

Some Thoughts on Thanksgiving Day

Thanksgiving Day is an annual national holiday in the United States, Canada
and a few other countries for the purpose of celebrating the harvest and other
blessings of the past year.

* Thanksgiving Day in America occurred when the Pilgrims, by order of
Governor William Bradford, held a three-day festival to commemorate their
harvest in the autumn of 1671.

* Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national harvest festival on November 26, 1863.
From that time on, Thanksgiving Day has been an annual holiday in the
United States, proclaimed yearly by the president and the governor of each state.
Lincoln announced that the celebration was to occur on the last Thursday in
November.

* In 1941, Congress and the President established the present date, the fourth
Thursday in November as the day for national thanksgiving.

* On Thanksgiving Day, we can have no greater objective than to gain a
true appreciation of the value of the blessings that we receive . . . and to
offer and show gratitude for them.

* Gratitude consists of two conditions . . . first, the sensing of favors
received and, second, a readiness to acknowledge them.

* Gratitude is deeper than thanks. Thankfulness is the beginning of
gratitude. Gratitude is the completion of thankfulness. Thankfulness
may consist merely of words. Gratitude is shown in acts.

* Real gratitude is not just a once-a-year response in “lip service.”
It’s a constant affair of the heart.

* It seems like there is magic in the expression of gratitude. The more we show and
tell of our gratitude . . . the greater the love that is developed . . . and shared . . .
and felt between people.

* Gratitude is also acknowledgment of divine favor. God is all about love. Father in
Heaven loves us . . . and as we express our gratitude to Him for all the many blessings
that we enjoy . . . our love for Him increases and we will surely . . . more intensely . . .
feel the warmth of His love. Our Father in Heaven likes to hear us give thanks.

* Actually lots of people like to hear expressions of thankfulness.
People like moms, dads, brothers, sisters.
People like teachers, volunteers, clergy, community leaders.
People like grandmothers, grandfathers, friends, aunts, and uncles.
People at work, in our neighborhoods, business associates, even strangers;
people who do good things for us . . . and help us . . . and bless us.

* Robert W. Woodruff, a prominent business leader in the United States once toured
the country giving a lecture called, “A capsule Course in Human Relations.”
In his message, he said that the two most important words in the English language
are these: “Thank you.”

* There is simplicity — even sincerity — when “thank you” is spoken.
There is a magic in real thanksgiving — in real gratitude.

* “Forgive Me When I Whine”

The other day upon the bus I saw a lovely girl with golden hair.

I envied her — she was so happy — and I wished I were as fair.

When suddenly she rose to leave — I saw her hobble down the aisle.

She had one leg and a pair of crutches — and, as she passed, a smile.

O God, forgive me when I whine — I have two legs, the world in mine!

Then, I stopped to buy some candy — the lad who sold it had such charm.

I visited — he was so pleased — if I were late it would do no harm.

And when I left he said to me “Thank you, . . . you’ve been so kind.”

“It’s nice to talk with folks like you — you see,” he said, “I’m blind.”

O God, forgive me when I whine — I have two eyes, the world is mine!

Then, later walking down the street, I saw a boy with eyes of blue.

He watched the other children play — it seemed he knew not what to do.

I paused a moment and I said — “Why don’t you join the others, dear?”

He looked ahead without a word — and then, I knew — he could not hear.

O God, forgive me when I whine — I have two ears, the world is mine!

With legs to take me where I’d go — with eyes to see the sunset’s glow
— with ears to hear what I should know . . .
O God, forgive me when I whine . . . I’m blessed indeed, the world is mine!
