People do and say some of the dumbest things during an interview. Avoid the 10 things that will usually get you rejected in your next interview:
  1. Being late for the interview (unless there is a legitimate reason and you call)
  2. Using anything negative about a former employer, family member etc.
  3. Medication that would alter your speech or actions
  4. Talking too much
  5. Being a know it all
  6. Shabby unkempt appearance, or revealing clothing
  7. Revealing more information than needed
  8. Lack of knowledge concerning the job
  9. Being disrespectful
  10. Not turning off your cell phone, or taking a call during the interview

Being late for the interview

There are times when being late is unavoidable. Always be sure to call ahead and tell your interviewer that you will be late and why, or reschedule the interview. Many consider being late, for no good reason, a character flaw.

Anything negative about a former employer, family member etc.

Avoid negative statements in an interview, especially concerning an individual or a company. These kinds of statements add nothing, are uncalled for, and not requested of the interviewer. Stick to answering the questions and leave off adding non-relevant information and more particularly personal information.

Medication that would alter your speech or actions

Some nervousness is normal in an interview and is far more acceptable than any kind of medicated appearance. If you are on medication that is of the type that alters speech or actions, it is best to leave it off before an interview if possible.

Talking too much

Some folks talk themselves right out of a job. The purpose of the interview is to get the necessary information to determine if the job candidate is a match. Therefore, avoid non-essential information; it could cloud the issue.

Being a know it all

Companies do not want employees who want to try to tell them how to run the company. They are looking for competent people who know how to get the job done well and who know how to mind their own business. They hire knowledgeable consultants to help them with administrative problems and growth potential.

Shabby unkempt appearance, or revealing clothes

Dress appropriate for the type of job for which you are applying. If it is a suit and tie job, dress that way, or blue-collar dress that way, but always be neat and clean. People with poor hygiene restrict themselves. Women particularly should always dress modestly when being interviewed. Otherwise, it can be a distraction and make the interviewer uncomfortable. If you have, an itch let it be, and be sure to use the restroom before you go.

Revealing more information than needed

The interviewer will certainly ask for the information they are looking for. Resist the temptation to fill them in on extra personal information. They are on a time schedule and do not want your life’s history, and some personal information can reduce your chances of getting the job. Always be honest. Answer only the questions, and avoid including incriminating personal information unless asked.

Lack of knowledge concerning the job

Do not waste your time applying for jobs you are not qualified for unless the company is willing to train you for a particular job. Be sure you know something about the company and their policies.

Being disrespectful

The following interview is an excellent example of showing disrespect during an interview:

“I once interviewed a man whose first comment was that the office was being run all wrong and that he would make immediate changes.  When he gave me examples of his ideas, it indicated a complete lack of understanding of the operation and company policy.  I resisted the impulse to immediately end the interview, which, unfortunately, gave him the opportunity to tell me that he thought I was incompetent.   I told him I didn’t think he’d be a good fit for the company.  He replied that he was going to contact the owner to tell him that he should have my job.  It was all worth it for the look on his face when I told him that he was talking to the owner and that SHE declined his offer.”

Not turning off your cell phone

The following is an outrageous example of ignorance concerning cell phone use during an interview:

“ My wife was interviewing this woman who received a cell call with an extremely loud ring tone. Without any ‘excuse me’ she then stopped listening to questioning immediately, answered call, stood up and walked out of office while yelling into phone, then 20 minutes later came back in expecting interview to continue… completely oblivious to her actions!”   -Ted
