The Soul Punch, I’m Dying!

Written by Jimmie Burroughs

Those two words “I’m dying” were the two words referred to by the award winning actor, Matthew McConaughey, as a “soul punch.”  They were a couple of words from his latest movie “Dallas Buyers Club.” In order to be convincing, great actors must convince themselves that what they are saying is true. I suppose that’s the reason it hit so close to home. We are dying . . . All of us are dying, but we somehow dismiss it from our minds, as we should; I must say that we should dwell on living, but if we are wise, we will also prepare for dying.

Life is uncertain. All that separates us from death is that little heartbeat. We are just one heartbeat away from death at any given time. We generally think of death as something that happens when we are old. One day we get everything in order, put on our pajamas, crawl into bed, curl up our toes and die. That isn’t the way it happens most of the time. Thousands of people get into their automobiles each year little knowing that it will be the last trip they will ever take. Thousands more die suddenly with a heart attack or are killed in accidents ranging from falling in the bathtub to choking on their food in a restaurant. Strangely, a man and his wife were driving along the highway when a steel rod propelled by a mowing machine beside the highway struck one passing through them and also hitting the other, killing them both instantly. Regardless of the way we die, we all have a future appointment with death. The Bible says, And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.”1

Whether or not you believe that has no bearing on whether it’s true. It’s easy to believe a lie and sometimes hard to face the truth. I suppose that is what McConaughey meant when he said that the statement in the movie “I’m dying” was a soul punch that he would never forget. I hope that it was also an awakening.

In Sydney, Australia a man, by the name of Mr. Ginner, went out on George Street each day for years and asked folks the same question, “If you were to die today, where would you spend eternity? The Bible says it would either be heaven or hell.” People continued on their way somewhat stunned by the question. Some said later that they had never heard such a question as that before, and it troubled them to no end until they were able to find the solution.

There is only one solution to death. God, who is the creator of all life, provides it through His Son, Jesus Christ. The Scripture says, But God commends his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” -2 Jesus said,I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. 3 Yes, there is but one solution to death and that is eternal life through Jesus Christ.
